Lancer,
Why on earth do they have such old rifles in the armory? No other way to dispose of them? I have an idea - sell them to an avid American collector!!! :) Do you work for Police or Military?

Airsoft guns out of the box are for the most part barely passable for skirmishing. As Oblivion said, they are sub 300, most sub 250fps. I have an SG1 and an MP5A5 that shoot 350fps and 300fps repsectively. All I have done is put in a heavier spring and low tolerance accuracy barrel. After next week or so things should pick up a bit! I have an all metal upgrade coming for my SG1. Since it is such a large rifle it tend to flex a bit and has some other design flaws that the metal body and some other TLC will fix. It will also be getting an even stronger spring for more fps - around 400. I will aslo need to upgrade my gears and gear bushings in the gearbox, gears to save the motor from burning out against the greater torque of the stronger spring and metal gear bushings to keep the gears in line with the greater torque. Makes for a longer lasting setup - a new gearbox costs a bit 'o cash. The MP5 will get the old spring from the SG1 as well... Kinda like gunsmithing!

The SG1 will be used similarly to the Dragunov concept in the Soviet Army - a specially selected marksman per platoon was/is issued a Dragunov. They are not really snipers per se, Dragunov's are not capable of that kind of accuracy (actually they do meet NATO sniper weapon accuracy specs - 15in groups at 600 yards) but are more accurate than their predesecessor the Moisin-Nagant 91/30.

Can you tell I am a Dragunov fan? :D Anyway the SG1 is capable of more accuracy than the Dragunov, but hey this is airsoft and we are talking no real range for sniping here. Plus we have to consider the the safety of those we "kill", unlike real war. So ranges are limited by fps and type of round (6mm plastic BB's). It still works a I demonstrated at:

Operation: Inclement Weather.

I was part fo the Alpha Spec Ops team - we did deep penetration ops, and harrased the enemy where appropriate. Too bad I had a Hephalump and a Snuffleufagus as part of my team. They are great guys, but can not move in the woods...! Yes, they know their respective nicks...I reminded them constantly...

So the MP5 will be my secondary for close engagements, especially as I may eventually take the SG1 to 450 or 500 fps. That will depend upon the games I play in - some have a 400 fps limit - period, and others allow 500 fps for sniper weapons. I CAN do both, swapping the prings before the game...which is what I will likely do.

The test will be at:

Operation: Lion Claws

where I am second in command (along with another bloke) under Col. McNight (yes, THE Col. McNight of Mogadishu fame).

Steel,
how much did your MP5 cost? I saw a few at a gun show back in seventh grade for $6.5 Gs min.
I love guns, I don't think hunting is ethical so when I shoot, I shoot tin cans, beer bottles and debris. Haven't fired a weapon in a few years. Only military weps I have fired were M16A1 in Second grade, and the M1
Carbine. The carbine was annoying it had about the kick of a .22, but the muzzle would go way up whenever i would fire.

Venom,
That would prolly be about the right price, if you could actually get one nowadays. My MP5 is an airsoft gun...that whole post was pretty much about airsoft.

Ob...sorry I must have missed that entire thing! Must be on the first page...

Well, if you want to be like everyone else, yes get an M4. You might want to talk to JB, he is looking to sell his unless I can talk him out of it...

I like these guys:

www.airsoftshop.com

They are in H.K., but have better prices than anyone else I can find, even if you include express shipping from Hong Kong! If they do not have what you want, I bet Eddie can get it.

For a stateside shop, check out:

www.generationairsoft.com

Best stateside prices I can find. You might want to consider a stateside shop if you are in a hurry - things can get slow with customs. If you order from overseas, make sure you do the orange paint on the barrel and the trademark removel (temporary for both is prolly fine - personally I don't care about trademarks - it is a freakin' toy).

If you are at all mechanically inclined, do your upgrades yourself unless you purchase it with the gun (much easier and usually pretty cheap). There are guides on the web for doing upgrades if you decide to get a stock gun and upgrade it later.

Personally I would stick with Tokyo Marui guns, unless you are talking GBB pistols. Then I would stick with Western Arms. Yep both cost more for what you seem to get, but you do get what you pay for. There are some exceptions, of course.

THIS is an airsoft discussion! Take that paintball crap outta here!

j/k bro...

If you ARE interested in scenario stuff, you would probably be happier playing airsoft. Check out the link I posted above (might be on page 1) and these:

http://www.operationlionclaws.com

http://www.combatenterprises.com/oplockd/index.htm

http://www.combatenterprises.com/cqbfortord/index.html

These are the types of large scenarios that are done, in addition most area player groups play monthly as well. Are there any airsoft groups near you? Visiting a game might be a good way to see if you like it - often folks have an extra gun they will let you use - MUST be very polit though - these guns are expensive.

Sorry - I can not help you with paintball, maybe someone else can.

BB,
Try a search here for potential players in your area:

http://www.airsoftplayers.com/players.asp

You can also post on the airsoftplayers and airsoftretreat forums asking if there are games/other airsofters in your area.

You could also look for the big events and make a trip a couple of times per year...those are actually the most fun.

Veg,

I was wondering if you or any other mini fans use many decals on your mechs? I haven't so far but would like to add some. I can paint a few number free hand, but not well enough or in a big enough variety to do much good. I'd like to be able to get some unit insignia plus various numerals, esp. ones with a contrasting outline and maybe various warning labels/stripes, etc.. I know a guy who made some decals using that laser printer decal stuff. They look decent but he just made black DCM symbols. He said it might work best on color if you took your file to a propfessional copier and let them run them on a color laser. I like the idea but I haven't found many good fonts for BTech stuff. I've found a few military ones but they are monotone and not that exciting. I think you need a decent graphics program to be able to drop all the insignia graphics and numerals/letters all in one file so they will print a bunch on one sheet. I'm not a graphics whiz so I don't know how hard it would be to import all the symbols & get them scaled right.

Anyone have any advice on making decals or where you can by a useful variety? I've seen some places that sell them but it's like you have to buy one sheet of the same symbol.

I know this is an old thread, and it wavered off the first subject, but are any of you Battletech guys out there still wanting to show off your painted Mech figures? Even if we can't post them somewhere, we can always swap them by email. I like to see other people's work, it gives me ideas for paint jobs. I have recently started painting again though I tend to take forever to finish one.
