ok first off, to answer steel's question. no i am not union. we DO have union construction work, but we also have the ability to be non union as well. unlike some states. if i were to guess ( becuse i am hehe) i would say about 90% of construction work just dealing with remodel and residential new construction is done by NON union workers. the union starts playing a part in large jobs such as highway construction or building city, state or federal owned buildings or building sites.

just so everyone knows i guess my 'official' job title would be a general contractors helper? i basikly do the on job site duties as a general contractor would, but dont have to make the financial decisions and/or alot of the major bare knuckle choices regarding a job. but i do handle the responsibility of makeing those choices fact after its decided. so maybe i would be a forman? to be honest im not sure what i am lol. i just know my job and do it the best i can with what i have.

ok to answer your second question about reporting ppl.

first off, its hard to actualy KNOW. i realy cant see myself going up to a group and asken them if they happen to be in the US illegaly. i speculate that some groups have a mix of both legal and illegal workers involved. then there is always the aspect ( since we use alot of contractors again and again) that if we investigated someone and their life was turned upside down becuse we were mistaken, then they would NEVER do the job we need them to do. becuse they WERE legal. Then there is the fact that the penelties are just not there to make it painfull enough for that person to stop. a few thousand dollar fine is a drop in a the bucket on a 20-30 k job. they get fined. fire those illegal. hire legal grunts for awhile, wait for the heat to die down and then hire illegals again. and like i said, its the illegal who pays for it in the end. so in some ways reporting ppl becomes a moral turmoil. do you do whats 'right' for the USA economy, or do you do whats 'right' to the worker whos boat ive been in myself a few times? ( meaning broke and working ass off for nothing )

anyhow, i too agree with kodiak's number 1 and 2 as well. 3 im a on the hinge on. one aspect of it, you raise min wage. and priced of every day things go up. becuse the cost of producing it goes up. and we all know buisnesses WILL pass this on to us. if you make a national min wage locked to say where it is, then your not taken into account the different economic factors for each region. like say a small batch pad in Oklahoma city can sell for around 80K where here you cant even touch it for less then 140K and in California its probably up somewhere around 200-300K.
from what i can tell, the best approach would be to pay them their reginal min wage like legal workers. ( only IF they are a regestered guest worker) and then we will just deal with the higher prices as they come?

anyhow i didnt mean to highjack any post lol. it was just a good discusion i could actualy pipe in on. and something ive seen a little of and knew a little something about ( noticed the key word ' little ' ) so i put my two cents in and offered my perspective as i see it. the main reason i enjoy these posts like this is becuse if there is some fatal flaw in my line of reasoning. and someone points this out of me, then i become a better person for it. i think for this hick, the interent has been one of the largest mind openers for me then anything else. being exposed to military, engineers, police officers, etc, etc, etc people who in normal life i probably wouldnt have anything to do with them has been great! Thats the spirit in which i offer my posts and i hope thats the spirit in which ppl read them.
