Just got a PS3. It's actually pretty damn cool. I just installed a program called mediatomb on my linux 'server' and I can now share all my music, videos, and pictures down to the TV using the PS3 console interface.

I also installed Fedora 7, so it itself can act as a full blown computer with wireless internet access and all (I'm posting from it now)

Not to mention it plays all our existing PS2 games on top of new PS3 games

And on top of all that it is a Blu-ray DVD player.

Ok, so it is kind of expensive, but considering what it does, and how many roles it can fill, it is pretty damn cool. And once the wife said she wanted one, I wasn't gonna wait for her to change her mind, hehe.

My only beef is that I can only run linux using 480p (way too small) or 1080i (interlaced sucks for computers; lots of flicker); but that's a limitation of my old arse TV, not the actual console. If my TV actually supported 720p or 1080p I'd be in heaven.

Nah, I always had a PS2 and or some other console around the house. Different games are better for those, ala the Transformers game about to come out, and Guitar hero type games...

Should of got an X360 and then you could join up with Gator and myself for some MP COOP.

Yes. My wife plays more console games than I do; when I play it is usually because she wants to do some coop or vs. kind of stuff on the console. It's more her toy than mine. We both game, but we don't overlap entirely on genres. I, for instance, will play flight sims. She will not. We both do MMORPG's, and FPS's, though my wife will kick my but in some UT2004. She won't play real time strategies either, but she plays those games like Silent Hill, Prince of Persia, God of War and other stuff on the console I can't get into too much...

I just thought it was cool that you could do so much with it. I really thought it was just a stupid console; the multiple media aspects, when you configure it to take advantage of all of them really do seem pretty cool...

I mean when you consider 'systems' like the Apple TV etc. that are getting people to pay just for streaming music and video to their TV starting, for the most part, at a couple hundred dollars, it does all that plus a lot more. Not to mention you can buy a remote for cheap, and it will act as a true DVD/Blu-Ray player, game console, media PC yadda yadda yadda (yes that's a technical term)... you get what I mean...

I don't know if anyone has the Wii either, but we will probably be picking up one of them a little down the road too.

The only console I ever actually owned was an Atari 2600. However, I had many friends while growing up so I got to use their Colecovisions, Intellivisions, Nintendos and Super Nintendos quite a bit.

I still own the following "old school" consoles:

3DO, Sega Genesis, Nintendo 64.

They are sitting in boxes in my garage, and the Nintendo 64 is in mint condition. As I only played it back in 1999, when my PC fried and I was waiting for replacement parts.

I used to have an Atari 2600, an Intellivision, and a Coleco Vision. Who remembers those consoles?

we have been thinking about a Wii, but i am not sure...

one reason is the lack of time both of us have...

then which between the ps3, 360, or wii...

i doubt many games will appeal to me on the console...so it is all for Nidia.

Well my Wife just bought me a Wii for my birthday and i have to say it's great!

The controllers take some time getting used to but after a few days i'm getting the hang of them, they make it far more fun to play any game.

The Wii while not being the best GFX (PS2 Standard i'd say) it is much more fun to play than any other console i've used. Fancy GFX and mega connectivity are all very well but my PC has that. The Wii involves you more in the games even the sports pack you get with it are very basic games but when you are playing tennis, baseball, boxing, or even bowling it is great fun swinging your remote control about actually copying what you would be doing if you were actually playing for real. Rather than just sitting there on the sofa with your control pad in your hand furiously tapping buttons and moving the paddles about you are standing up jumping around in front of the tv like a nutter.

Take Boxing for example the consiole can detect not just your punches that you throw but also if you are leaning left or right, forwards or backwards so you can duck and dive the opponents punches great fun!

Two player is also great Boxing, Tennis, and baseball (one is pitcher and other batter),but it is also very dangerous having 2 people flapping there arms about in front of the TV (ask my wife i whacked her on the head twice while playing tennis!

).

I have Red Steel for it and Heatseeker. Redsteel is your basic FPS but with sword fights thrown in and yes you have to do the moves for these and it's quite hard to learn how to sword fight in it, but great fun,

Heatseeker is you basic arcade/console fighter shoot em up (flight sims or lack of even semi realistic ones has always been the consoles weakest point IMHO but then consoles just don't have enough keys available to do proper ones) but it is good for a bit of fun.
So if you are looking for a way to have a more fun and involving night of gaming and also something that looks fun enough to get the other half interested the the Wii wins hands down.

P.S. it is also backwards compatible with N64 and other old consoles and you can download some of those old classics to play on it as well (for a price though).

I wonder if Wii controllers would work with Silent Hunter 4? You know, you could make circular turning motions with both arms pretending that you are turning the wheel and taking the sub down.

Well the controller comes with wrist straps that the manual tells you to wear all the time you are playing and with the amount of arm waving that goes on in some of the more intense sword fights in Redsteel i think its a must!
