I've had about ten people approach me about installing Vista, and I first ask them how old is their machines plus what are the specks (most responded back once they found out that specks wise celleron processors and all the trimmings that go along with that), on average the pc's were three to four years old. I immediately tell them what it would cost you to upgrade with software and hardware plus signing an agreement after a successful install that I am in no way shape form or face liable and or responsible for further assistance with said upgrade/install, they could buy two or three pc's.

Here's a dumb but good question: How can you play a game that is dependent on DX-9 on Vista??? Last I checked whenever MS came out with a new version of DX it was always backwards compatible, but I just installed a demo of BSM and it asked me if I wanted to load DX-9 and I said no of course but now I get a DX-9 .dll related error from the file that is missing. Doese anyone know of a work around???

All my games are working without having had to install DX9. Several of them have asked to install it too; just keep clicking no. I wouldn't want to risk overwriting newer versions of files with older... I wouldn't install DX8 on a system I had DX9 on if an older game asked me... seems like trouble.
I would think all the DX whatever on up to DX9 API's would be included in DX10 and be backwards compatible... *shrug*
Actually I would imagine if the DX installers were written properly they would no update anything newer anyway, so it probably takes 8/10ths of a second to do nothing and finish...

Hudson,
I'd have to dig up my references, but I believe the APIs are all back compat, but there is some "content" that isn't included in dx10. I have seen some threads that indicate certain older games depend on said "content" and by installing the more current dx9 setups puts that stuff that they assume to be present into the right place so the older games will work. I'm probably missing something on the details, but there is definitely something to it.

Ya, I was looking at a list, and it looked like a bit of back ***ward programming was responsible for some games relying on .dll's copied into game folders. If you were missing the dll would not run properly. The fixes usually included copying whatever dll to whatever folder inside the game folder. That is poor programming indeed...
I can't for the life of me find the page, but I seem to recall Resident Evil 4 being one such game that need some file like d3d9 or d3dx9.dll some junk like that in a particular folder...

The d3dx9.dll file was the file it was looking for. But it dosen't matter because the damn demo is multiplayer only and only thru gamespy and I couldn't get a connection even after I took down my firewall, but I didn't take down all of Windows VistaSHIT ultimates three firewalls, yes from where I see it the damn thing has three damn firewalls (atleast thats what I saw) I could be wrong.
