New(ish) material

Who's seen this latest innovation in plastics being touted around the news in recent days/weeks? I think it's referred to as D3A or something like that.
It has the feel of jelly, and is very flexible. Almost like the jelly slime we all know so well. You can then see it being rolled into a ball in the demo, and struck with a hammer/mallet - the mallet simply bounces off without the ball of material splatting everywhere as you might expect to see. Simply ingenious - I believe they also said the US ski slalom teams were already trialing the material in their race suits on their forearms and shins, to combat the effects of knocking the slalom poles out of the way during a race. Should be making it's way into most sports soon then - hockey, soccer, football etc.,

So it's a malleable, jelly-like material that hardens under impact? Wonder if that would ever make it into bullet proof vests, so they could be totally flexible, yet stop a bullett.....obviously a 9mm round is a different kettle of fish to a ski pole, but the principle is sound.

Mooseman, am sure you must have seen that recently on the news, eh? But yes, exactly that - hardens under impact pressure. I think it even amused the demonstrator in the video clip somewhat, even though am sure he's done it before a hundred times, he still seemed quite taken by it as he did the demo. LOL

hmm i tried to google new plastics. didnt see any articles about this one. but i did find alot of other cool articles.
1 was a conductive polymer combined with a suger molycule that is common in human tissue. instead of nerve transplant they put this polymer in the place of a nerve and it promotes nerve regroth.
2 was a photosensitive plastic. nothing new about these realy. except this one goes outside the visible spectrum of light into the infra red. meaning new solor cells for energy since it can take in 30% of the suns light spectrum vs the 6% thats common today.
so if you guys find a link to this please post it, it would be a good read im sure.

Nice find BH, will try to find a link on the news channels for the 'D3A' or whatever they called it.

So, is the 151st still active as a Mech unit Moose? My sister-in-law runs with her own team, they're called United Knights (nothing to do with the obvious other group that call themselves "United Knights"). They have their own website to check out if you like, and am sure they'd appreciate a challenge or two if you guys were still interested in that sort of thing.

Unfortunately not mate....it did enjoy a 2 week revival, but then we remembered why we binned it in the first place. IMO, the original game, whilst flawed, was a good laugh, obviously not a sim, but as close as your realistically going to get in 20 foot tall robots
. The subsequent expansions buggered it up really, with some ill thought out weapons and mechs, that allowed way too much 'boating' (for the non-mech head this is loading up entirely with one type of weapon). Things like the Nova Cat of doom, which any ELH'er will be able to describe became even worse as a result of a bug which allowed the player to essentially ignore heat restrictions, which turned the damm thing into a killing machine....still, it would be nice to have a run round in a mad cat again..might have to re-reinstall the game

Well, I know their group is fairly well run, so they're not the types to do the old cheating thing. But if enough of us were interested, we could have a go at some point? I still hold my copy, so anyway. let me know, I can set something up somehow. No doubt the wife will want to play on her sister's team too as she enjoys the Mech thing now and then too!
