Help Panzer or anyone else. Major comp problem. Need new cpu

What kind of Amd Athlon 64 cpu do you have? It must obviously be good? How does it compare to my athlon xp 3200.
I'm also looking at sempron chips, but I can't understand if there is one that compares to my athlon xp 3200. Can you take a look at this road map and see what you think? What compares to it?

I have the AMD XP 3700+ and Jedi Master has the same CPU as well. I'd say that it's significantly faster than the XP 3200. I saw a noticeable improvement in Lock On and in IL-2. I'm not familiar with sempron chips though.

Is an Amd XP 3700 a Athlon 64? I thought you had an Athlon 64

oh yeah, it's an Athlon 64! Sorry, I forgot to specify that. It's the Athlon 64 3700+. I meant to put 64, not XP.

I assume you intend on keeping hold of current mobo? That pretty much is what will restrict or open up your choice of CPUs as you know. Something I AM aware of, is that there was a batch of XP3200+ CPUs which were re-labeled and sold as XP2500+ CPUs due to the demand at the time. They are capable of being clocked up, and the power supply line adjusted to cope with the extra power consumption - this effectively returns the CPU to it's original spec and that at a fraction of the cost. Having said that, it's pretty much hit and miss as far as finding one is concerned. Although you may also find some info around pointing to the particular batch number which were 'de-tuned'. That would allow you to search out the relevant chips.

No I believe I lost the mobo and cpu. I bought a new mobo and it still wouldn't kick over. So I imagine it's the cpu. I could order another barton amd xp 3200 plus..but for the price, I was thinking I should just upgrade now. blah...I'm thinking of this cpu

But Panzer has a 3700....I'm unsure if this is the best way to go or if I should get the 3700..hmm.
PANZER I'm assuming you're using a socket 939 mobo? Price is a factor. I can get this cpu with a MSI mobo for $240

Sorry, a few people posted as I was writing mine.
XP is NOT 64 guys
With Athlon you have:
AMD Athlon XP series
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ - 3800+ Venice 90nm (Socket 939)
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 90nm (Socket 939)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800 - 4800 (Socket 939)
AMD Athlon FX57 San Diego 90nm (Socket 939)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core FX60 (Socket 939)
They're all 939 socket so you should be able to put whjatever ione you want in there as long as the mobo can hack the CPU clock speeds.

Well, it certainly doesn't look too bad a choice.

I take it you need something now, so the 3700+ is a good deal with a 939 mobo.
The new AM2/DDR2 A64s are coming out soon, but then you need new RAM too. Oh, a large number of 939 mobos are PCI Express, not AGP. Take that into account as well.
Anyway, while on the surface a 3200 and 3700 should compare directly (ie 500 faster), in reality the A64 3200 runs a bit better than an XP 3200, so you get "more than you're paying for".

But I'm looking at the 3000 not the 3200 A64. Any thoughts on the 3000? Will it perform better than the athlon xp 3200? I can't afford a socket 939 rig right now. It would mean new ram, new vid card, etc...no good.
So my choices are replace my current athlon xp 3200+ with a new A64 3000+ OR just buy a new athlon xp3200+ chip. The thing is the price of the new xp3200 is comparable to a new A64 3000. So I wanna know if the I'm getting better performance out of the A64 3000?

Wait, a Sempron 3000? I've not looked into them too much myself, but are you saying it should be able to use the same mobo as your current XP 3200?
As far as comparing its performance, the number is supposed to indicate that, so a 3000 should be slightly slower than your 3200, like a P4 3.2GHz is slightly faster than a P4 3.0GHz.

Apparently, I'm being unclear...sorry man.
Ok this is what I have: Athlon XP 3200.
This is what I'm thinking of getting: Athlon 64 3000+ (754 Socket)
Which will perform better/faster?

the Athlon 64 3000+, no doubt.

Ok then, I think that is what I can afford right now. Actually I can't even afford that ....but it's what I can charge to a credit card with any hope of paying it off. sigh. Essentially my old mobo and cpu succumbed to overheat or suffered some sort of failure during the transfer to the new case. I'm pissed, but there it is. Nothing i cna do about it. Last time I ever do something like this. Next time I'll just upgrade.

Well, if I might venture to suggest that you'd save more money in the long run by purchasing a 939 socket mobo, and CPU. That way, you could find further CPU upgradability without the necessity (dependant on mobo purchased) to buy a new mobo to accomodate that new chip when you finally decide you have enough money to buy it.

No, that's really not an option since that I would mean waiting a very very long time. I cannot afford such an upgrade in the near future. It would mean extensive upgrade to my whole system essentially.

Maybe one of the guys has a 939 mobo, they can sell you fairly cheap then? Anyone? Just an idea mate.

I think that will work for you Grifter, sounds faster than what you have now. Based on the reviews for the CPU in your link, that sounds like a good CPU to get. Go for it. As I always say, get the fastest you can afford.
So what happened to your current setup? How did you lose both MB and CPU? If this was discussed earlier, I apologize as I don't recall the discussion.
Good luck man.
P.S. <3 to Newegg, they are a very good PC parts supplier. I have had nothing but good experiences with them. Extremely fast delivery service too! They told me 5 days for my RAM, I got it in 2.
