Oh this is the big AMD news? IBM & AMD, that could be a real serious partnership! Look out Intel! Mind you, I wouldn't be surprised to see them end up with ATi to be honest. :shock:

The potential problem affects a number of single-core Opteron 152, 154, 252, 254, 852, and 854 processors manufactured in late 2005 or early 2006, AMD said Friday. The company hasn't seen the problem in production use, but has seen it in a test that combines high processor temperature, high outside temperature and a large number of floating-point mathematical computations.

AMD is working with computer makers to track down the chips and is offering free replacements.

Well, IMHO, in the overall grand scheme of things, 3000 chips isn't a great deal to be honest. That amounts to what? $900000 if that much. And that is nothing more than a drop in the ocean for such a large company. Sure, there's a certain amount of press & publicity, but any company worth it's salt could easily turn that to their advantage. All it needs is a little tactful thought, and the right move.

hehe! how large do you think AMD is? that MIGHT also be the cost of a CPU replacement, but have you considered the cost of the logistical nightmare this is going to be? 300 is not even the low retail cost of the low end cpu in the affected parts. now granted that is retail cost and not what it costs them, but giving away a second cpu to replace one already sold erodes a lot of profit. then think about customers that are going to want compansation for lost runtime during the diagnosis and replacement time...and then those that are going to see if errors were made by their affected cpu's which have costed them money due to the math being incorrect. this is about the largest kind of rathole a company could have open up on them...

3000 - do you really not think that is understated on purpose? our company alone bought and resold about 10,000 Opterons that could be affected for a cost of about 6.5 million from Oct 05 to Mar 06.

Yes, when put like that it changes the face of the whole thing. There will always be those who jump on the bandwagon to see what they can get out of it.
I guess all that remains for us to take note of, is how this will affect their overall pricing.
