Currently I have 1 gig of CORSAIR XMS 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) in my box.

I want/need to upgrade it to 2 gigs but here is the question........

Can I combine PC3200 and say PC4400 ram if all other specs are the same?

I'm looking at this for the RAM upgrade:

CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 550 (PC 4400)

269$ for the PC4400
257$ for the PC3200

So can I combine the 4400 with my current 1 gig of 3200 for 3 gig total? or should I just get 2 gig of the 3200 and call it good?

you can combine - normally you will not have problems as the systems memory controller will negotiate to lowest common denominotor in regards to performance. you never know though - the faster you o the more timing issues you can encounter, so your mileage may vary. if you can afford it, just get all the same...

another issue to consider though. all new mainboards/cpu's are going to ddr2. if you HAVE to have the extra ram right now, i would get away as cheap as possible. soon (actually right now - no memory controllers go that fast unless you overclock) there is no point in having pc4400 ddr modules.

I have a ASUS 939 nvidia 4 SLI Delux mobo currently, but have been thinking about a new one because there is a chipset fan on the mobo that I think has wiped a bearing/bushing and it makes a ugly racket at times (think R/C airplane noise) but I have confirmed it is still spinning so.....

anyway, I'll just get the 3200 and call it good for now.

BTW...over lunch I checked Slammys blog and he posted a small update. He's fine, just busy as hell

you should replace that fan. it will not cost more than a few bucks.

Yeah, no kidding, cos if you don't it may cost you a bit more than a few bucks.
