would you get a 8800gtx or a 7950 GX2? especially providing you can save $200+ buying a 7950 GX2...

I really dont know too much about these video cards but how much faster is the 8800 supposed to be over the 7950? I would check out websites like Andantech and Toms Hardware and see if they've done indepth anaylses on the cards. For a $200 price difference, that performance difference needs to be very significant.

i'd lean toward the 88 ... i've read that it is faster than dual 7900's and I'd like to have the dx10/sm4 capability.

I agree with Gator, I would plan ahead for the DX10 stuff. I'm assuming the 8800 is a DX10 card? If you got the cash, get the fastest possible. When I bought my 7900 GTX (March 06) that was the fastest card at the time, I'm hoping it lasts me another year or two.

ah - 7xxx series are not dx10? even though the 7950 gx2 has dual cores, the 8xxx might be better then...

The 8800 is the first DX10 card ever, ATI hasn't released theirs yet.
The 7950 was tops for awhile, but many say the ATI X1950 XT is better in some things, YMMV.
Anyway, the 7xxx series are old tech, 8xxx is new, and ATI hasn't arrived yet.

Well I sat down and parted out a new system and it came to about 1600 bones. So now i dont know what to do. I'd like to get a intel Core 2 Duo, but from the stuff i have read so far the mobo chipsets are all over the place quality/feature/stable wise.
AMD wont have their 65nm chips out till mid to summer 07, and instead of using their AM2 or 939 sockets, they will use some other.......so right now I dont know what direction to go. I am almost leaning to staying with AMD and taking a mid step and waiting for the true multi core 65nm and sub 65 nm wars next summer.
