The MMO craze is really getting out of hand. The market simply doesn't exist for so many MMO's and the market is quite crowded already. Star Wars Galaxies has been suffering a long slow decline and the Matrix Online is basically on life support. It seems that World of Warcraft has totally taken over market share and it will stay that way for a while.

World War II Online has been around now for over 5 years. It's still in existence thanks to the low cost overhead. It's the only MMO which I have ever played but I eventually cancelled my subscription after 3 years because I got bored with the game. I think the total subscription base is only like 12,000 or so.

Shadowbane has been around since 2003, and it's on its last legs for sure. However, since June 2006, Shadowbane has been FREE to play. You can DL the client for free, setup an account, and login and play for FREE. No CC information is required at signup. I don't know how much longer this will last, but if you are into full PVP, RPG style gameplay, realm and city building, and can handle the 3+ year old graphics, then check it out.

Even though I do not play SB anymore (no time), for someone that has not gone into the world of MMOs, it's a nice place to start and you can't beat free. What's to lose besides time?

I just read this online a few minutes ago. Quite amazing:

WoW Larger Than 145 Countries

Blizzard sends along the latest subscriber milestone for World of WarCraft, announcing the population in their MMORPG has passed the eight million mark. According to the 2006 estimates from the CIA World Factbook, if WoW were a nation, it would be the 94th most populated country on Earth, ranking between Azerbaijan's 7,961,619 citizens, and Burundi's 8,090,068. Word is:

Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. announced today that World of Warcraft®, its subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), is now played by more than 8 million gamers around the world. World of Warcraft has also achieved new regional subscriber milestones, with more than 2 million players in North America, more than 1.5 million players in Europe, and more than 3.5 million players in China.
