rut ro raggy....

well either the cpu is DOA, or the bios in the mobo is very old and thus wont support my current cpu (although my cpu is listedas supported onthe ASUS web page for this mobo) or I have really screwed something up.

My mobo has a lcd poster on the back and the post codes I get are "cpu init" at startup and then it goes into "cpu chg" with the latter one meaning change the CPU.....like I said...rut ro...

So tonight I'll pull everything out except the cd/rom, vid card and see what I can come up with. The ASUS web page is frankly a freaking mess and of little help. I'm gonna try to flush the CMOS by using their onboard reset button and if that wont work then I'll pull the cmos battery and let it sit for 10 mins or so before putting it back in.

So far right now I have a $2000 boat anchor

Ok well man generally its not a support issue with the bios. If the CPU fits it should run. It may run at lower clock speeds and such until the bios is tweeked if the bios dose not auto detect things right off. but it should still run.

Can you at least get into he bios menus when you tuen on the pc ??? or do you not even get to the start up prompts showing ram and such (well on most MB now its a picture and u have to hit a button to see the details)

Recommend you don't pull everything apart right away as you may not need to. Plus I know how much fun that cpu cooler was to get on. And um this may sound dumb, but did you put the cpu in the right way, IE no forcing it into the the socket and such ???

good luck on the codes, I searched for 2 hours last night and a bunch this AM,
and so far cant find crap....ASUS web server must run on a C64 because their forums are "server too busy" and I'm having to use google cached views to see stuff relating to this code...what I have found so far is.....

It could be I have something messed up with the video power cable, apperently if you didnt hook that up it will post the "cpu chg" code on theback panel lcd poster. Others have said to reseat the cpu. I know itis in right, triangle to triangle, and it seated right because it just fell right into the socket, weight of gravity like. so tonight every thing comes out and we start over again. One piece of hardware at a time.

Ya, if the motherboard don't see a video card, you are going no ware fast. So before stripping out the CPU, try taking the video card out, putting it back ina nd redoing the power cables to it. I have had video cards not seated 100% end up not working. You get nothing at all.

Do you even see a pic on the screen or just error messages and such. Also dose the motherboard beep at all or just use that LED. I am more use to hearing the beeps from a motherboard lol.

Not much came up on searches but this info i probably what you found on the video card. I would first play with video before anything just because. If that don't work I wuld then move to bios.

There under bios version 502 is available with support for newer chips. I am assuming your chip is newer then the motherboard correct. So they may not have had the newest bios int he board.


also the error codes are in the manual, which is available online lol. So CPU Change, I don't think this is a rrror but the motherboard realizing its not set up for this CPU yet. but they are less then descriptive

I am doing a bit more looking but I would look at the video card first. then take the ram out of there sockets and place them back in again. RAM is another oe if not pushed in all the way can screw you. but ya I would NOT take the think apart just yet. Look peace by peace on the easy things and see if that solves it.

heh, would you believe that the old crappy 10 year old 13" dell monitor I was gonna use for the set up didnt seem to come on? now it my be because it has finally died (R.I.P old friend) or it may be because of the power to the vid card was not right.....I'll investagate when I get home tonight.

Ok well you need to get int the post area first. If you can get some video going then you are set. So big thing is to get the darn screen to come on and post. If you can't do that then you can't update bios from what I remember. so try a different monitor. Try the video card power and even removing and putting it back in its PCI express slot. If no go there, then try the ram, as if ram is not seated again you get no ware fast, as that can cause you not to be able to boot at all either. If you don't have to update the bios then don't yet. Seams like all that bios dose is support newer cpu's yet there is nothing saying which newer cpu's. big thing is to get some video before anything.

This might be a stupid question, but did you plug in the 4-pin (2x2 square shaped) power connector for the CPU power? Is is usually on the MB somewhere near the CPU.

Another thing to try would be to reset the CMOS.

The lights are really helpful when setting up & the board won't let you power-on unless you turn the light switch off so you don't have to worry about frying anything.

If you had done any research(you better have!), you will notice that the stock BIOS has some serious issues. Flash the BIOS with version 0401(as of December 28th, 2006) to alleviate any CPU issues.

aye, I know the old bios had problems etc....

I think my problem is I dont have something powered correctly and seated....will know more when I get home

so it is not correct that of the cpu fits it will run. Buff was exactly correct when he said it could be a newer cpu than the bios on the board supports... i just went through the same thing...

what exactly did you get again? i might have an older cpu to send to you to use for a bios update - or you might find a freindly pc shop nearby...maybe even take your board and ram in with everythign you need except the old version cpu.

the fact that it is listed as supported on the web page just means it is supported with latest bios - new stuff is often added with bios upgrades. you can look at the release notes up to the version of bios you have and see what/if cpu support is added with each revision.

or it just could be a bad cpu (probably not since it inits - but maybe)...

also if someone has the same Mboard close by, a PC shop maybe that has a running system, you can also pull the chip and take it to get it flashed, take it home and plug it back in, just be carefull to not bend any of the pins.

a few years ago i got a Mboard with bad bios it was posting all kind of creapy stuff on the 4 LED lights. it too said the CPU was bad. what realy was going on was a bad Cmos. they didnt allow me to return the Mboard, so i actualy bought another one, the same exact one actualy. after that, i pulled the new Cmos, and put it on the board in the case and the thing booted right up. after boot up, i pulled the chip, put the old chip in and flashed it. never had a problem with it again. for some reason after a year of use, the USB plugin on the Mboard caught fire ( dont ask me how! becuse i dont know...) and melted half the plug off. the Mboard was a little screwy after that but kinda worked, but i yanked it out and put the other mboard in lol. remember, its always an adventure man! good luck on getting it up and running!

Right , that’s flashing the Bios. I went through several pages on the net and from what I’ve read he’ll haft to call up and order a new Bios chip from Asus. Most people who have had the same problem with this board ( not booting up ) have all fixed it by doing just that BH. or have found another way to flash it. I know Asus forums are real busy at this time when it comes to a crosshair search so as an alternative there’s over 19 pages there at newegg with people talking about it. I went through about 5 or 6 pages before it started sounding all to familiar.

called ASUS, and even though their web page lists my cpu as supported....it isnt unless you flash the bios.

So....ASUS is sending me a new bios chip that will work =)

And yes BH, so far its really quite. I have all the fans set to high speed and they are not very loud, heck my current box makes more noise. This case moves a LOT of air. (2) 120mm fans in the front, (1) 120mm fan in the side, (1) 120mm fan at rear, and a 200mm fan on top. The PSU has 2 fans and I have a card with 2 fans on it that will be mounted next to the 7950X2GTS vid card
