Why still Ventrilo 2.1.4?

I have a reason for asking this, but it is rather a special case scenario, so being completely ignorant only wonder why we are using the older version, and am not necessarilly trying to push an otherwise unnecessary upgrade...

Nevermind... I saw this Wiki about the asshat author:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ventrilo

Question answered...

Actually after reading the bottom of their purchase page, it kinda makes me wonder why we consider using it at all. asshat is not a strong enough word...

It's probably not like that daof. You can't magically change the license on a program after you released it no matter how much you want and wish you had. And it sounds like that is exactly what he is trying to do.

It was free. How can you turn around and say it isn't free anymore after the fact. He's out of his freaking mind... at least I gather what's going on...

I just like the fact that this guy tryed his hardest to remove the free copies for download. You basically can't find any free copies any ware. Realy do some searching, and you can't find it hardley. So I would love to e mail him, this free software is GREAt, just to say NA NA NA NA, turn your back on somthing great especialy considering there are things liek team speak that are free and work fine. If he wanted cash, simple add in a banner add thing, done, he gets cash and we ignore the banner.

From Wikipiedia and I quote:
The current version of Ventrilo is 2.3.0 or 2.3.1 depending on platform. After version 2.1.2, Flagship Industries changed the software license governing the Ventrilo server to limit connection capacity of the freeware server to 8 users. An extremely restrictive license was also debuted for the "Pro" server which supports more than 8 simultaneous users. Among other restrictions, only large hosting companies may purchase licenses for the "Pro" server at the sole discretion of Flagship Industries.[1] This understandably caused concern and controversy as the author stated in numerous times that he had a "right" to earn money from his work and that all users wishing to continue with the present license were "thieves"[CN].

it is post here under versions and licensing. Here

exactly.

so what are you talking about?

maybe I missed something or misunderstood but isn't he saying anyone using the previous version of the software thus the license for said version is stealing from him (I'm guessing because we won't upgrade). I'm just making an observation and a joke really, I am not trying to imply anything. I just can't believe (if what I interpret is true) what he is trying to impose.

well, we are using 2.12 server, which has this in the LICENSE agreement:

5. Fees. A corporation or home user may use the software to
host its own server, without a fee, provided it does not charge
for its use directly or indirectly. Any home server, business,
or corporation that charges for use of its server, directly or
indirectly, shall be subject to licensing fees. Inclusion of a
Ventrilo server as part of any rental or membership package shall
be subject to a licensing fee which is calculated for servers
which are configured to handle a maximum number of clients at any
one time ("Maxclients") as US$0.10 multiplied by the number of
servers multiplied by the number of Maxclients per server
utilizing the Ventrilo software.

since I allow folks to use the Ventrilo server for free, I am not subject to any licensing fees. you can not retroactively change a license agreement, it will not hold water. and no, we are not stealing.

and 2.1.4 is the client, which is always free - even nowadays.

Yes, now that I've read the license, I can without doubt say he is freaking insane. The program is free, and he (the author) has no recourse but to grab a straw and suck it the f up. He may regret having made it free, but he is SOL now.

The only instance where he has a legitimate case is if people are using 2.1.2 to make money. Then they are commiting the fraud, etc. that he claims. But, as Steel said, he is not charging us anything to use it...

I know we are not stealing, the world knows we are not stealing but he is the only quack that says that. It was more of a joke, I guess a bad one and I want to take that back, as Jimmy Carter put it loosely my statement was taken out of context and I should have choosen my words more carefully. Again that is a loose loose interpretation of what he said in response to the Bush Administration out cry over is comment, but hell he was right "BUSH IS THE WORSE PRESIDENT THIS COUNTRY HAS EVER SEEN! I thought Regan would have held that title for a little bit longer, but hey I'm just a concerned citizen who dosen't count because I don't have the money nor means to get the money to matter to them.

yes but Jimmah Carter is a bitter, irreverent, piss poor, aging liberal who must have forgotten his years in office.....oh dont even get me started

Yes Jimmy made some mistakes but next to Lindon Nixon and Bush 1 & 2 and we can't forget Regan (even though he forgot himself on more than one occasion), how did he get in for a second term without voter fraud? I know everyone will not agree with me on this but Iraq is looking more and more like Viet Nam.
