they're the product of a male lion and a female tiger. With a breeding pair with the reverse (i.e. male tiger...) it's called a tion.
Whilst i'm not 100% sure if they do or don't occur in the wild (there are places where lions and tigers have overlapping territories) they'll never be widespread as they're all sterile (much in the same way as a mule) due to the unbalanced chromosomes they have as a result of being a hybrid...that's if my high school biology serves me well

not in the wild...
they are abominations and subject to health problems and sterile as Moose posts. they have been around a while though - nothing really new. not sure why people would want to do this.
