Which films have you seen in your lifetime in which the visual style used grabbed your attention immediately? Here's a short list from me:

Schindler's List: black and white except for one colour, so simple yet enough
Blade Runner
Transformers Really the CGI made it look REAL,
Matrix movies CGI could be seen in points but very good
Jason And the Argonotes Even now relay the stop motin stands out as one of the best

Schindler's List gritty black & white look was just perfect.

Last of the Mohicans
Lord of the Rings
Star Wars series

I think that is it for now.

Last of the Mohicans had some gorgeous cinematography. Very epic looking.

Even with the next-best-thing-to-real special effects of today, I still love the look of those old Universal monster movies - you know, like Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, etc. The Creature from the Black Lagoon has always been one of my favorites (the sequels much less so).

Newer stuff - I thought Jurassic Park looked great, even if the story got mauled by 'raptors on the way to the big screen. Same with the recent update of War of the Worlds - looked good, looked darn good, but smelled bad. As tempting as it is to include The Lord of the Rings, the cheese factor of the Super Elf, Legolas, was just too much to bear.

in terms of effects, i think Jurassic Park has dated really well. In contrast, LoTR, in parts, looks awful.

I have to agree with Vegetta Transformers was awesome, I dumb myself down for movies that I know will have CGI so I can give constructive critisizm until I see that first outline then I jump all over it and I honestly have to say that I stayed dumb thru the whole damn movie and enjoyed a great light show.

GrindHouse was awesome in its retro kinda way. Sidney Poitiers daughter was ummmmm lets see 10 on the drool oh meter and that long hair (I pray it was hers) dayum dayum dayum made me want to go horse back riding.

4 rooms was great (no special effects, just a great movie)
Hellraiser (cheesy but good)
Star Wars of course
Matrix (redefined CGI in my opinion)

To be honest I have had no issues with the effects of LOTR. I think they hold well but hey thats me. I think its a great story, who cares of CGI are what 5 years old lol. 2001 to watch now is dated bt again live with it, its a story thats amazing.

Here are some of my favorites:

1) Finding Nemo (Animated, but so colorful and believable)
2) Transformers 2007
3) 300 (Love the HD look and feel)
4) Beowulf (Animated and not yet released, and DAMN it looks nice)

I have to admit I am surprised no one has said star wars (origional 1-3, not the new 1-3) or even star trek

I think some of you are confusing CGI with the visual style of a film. They are two different things. I have not mentioned any of the Star Wars or Star Trek films because while I am a huge fan of those movies, I dont think they have a visual style which really separates them from most other films IMHO.

For example, look at the four Alien films. In the first film, the alien has a very dark gray almost black look to it while in the second film, the aliens have a dark blue look to them and in the third film, the alien has a very earthy brown look to it. These color differences weren't simply due to the actual color of the suits but also the lighting and visual style used by the director. These differences existed separately from any CGI or practical effects which may have been used.

Starwars did do great visual effects for stop motion and for there speeder race where they had to come up with a new method of doing things. So They did have some great visual above what was around at the time but its only parts of the show. Remember the ORIGIONAL starwars movies had no cgi, we are NOt counting any of the newer re vamped stuff.

That's why I said Star Wars series. Not the newer films. I think if you look at the Star Wars saga as a whole, it is visually stunning from the first to last film. I disagree and find Lucas' filming unique, his use of natural terrain as well as framing shots to be very strong.

Oh yeah - that first Alien movie had style out the proverbial wazoo and set a mood from the first frame. Very Lovecraftian tone there.

I liked the look of Batman Returns, as well. Oh, and *of course* The Valley of Gwangi. Some beautiful horses in that movie.

I don't know, I don't think I really care! I know some films have stuff that's nicer to look at, but I really never paid much attention.

Only thing I can think of is the scene in Revenge of the Sith as Anakin is watching the sunset and getting ready to go after the Chancellor.

I for one did not like the "style" of 300, or Sin City, or A Scanner Darkly. I prefer standard cinematography, I don't like it when they waste their time trying to make it "look" different. Wow me with the story and the acting, I just don't care about stuff like the silver process used on Alien Resurrection.
