G.I. Joe Movie

Post by PanzerMeyer »

Looks like political correctness has gone mad again....

G.I. Joe Gets a Makeover for Movie

Concerned about the current negative image of the American military in many countries, Paramount Pictures and Hasbro, the toy manufacturer, have decided that in their forthcoming film featuring comic-book patriot G.I. Joe, the character will become part of a multinational force, the London Daily Telegraph reported today (Tuesday). Even the character's name has become an acronym for Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity, the newspaper said. Word of the makeover is likely to anger U.S. conservatives, the Telegraph noted. The film is due to open in 2009.

you must have missed the thread where we hashed through this already a couple months ago ...

the way I see it, this movie with either succeed or suck, but either way, it probably won't be because of the acronym.

plus, I'm not sure you'd call it political correctness, it's probably more about the movie producers wanting to have the movie succeed on the world market.

Is there a term for "market correctness?"

The only way I can imagine this movie succeeding (now that I think about it) is if they play it totally Austin Powers, over-the-top action movie satire. Then, that silly acronym would be perfect. You'd have to cast Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the lead, though. That would work.

it was always that way in the UK anyway, so i guess I for one won't notice the difference. It wasn't actually called GI Joe, but Action Force.

I'm most familiar with the GI Joes from the 60s and still have a couple of the hairy ones from the early 70s.
