2001 : A Work of Art

You know, it's funny just how much new appreciation you get for a film after you've seen it several times. I had not seen 2001 for at least 10 years until last night when I watched the new 2 dvd set. I was completely enthralled during the first 25 minutes of the film where you have no dialogue and its a complete visual feast. I was amazed at how good the ships and space station looked in space, especially when you consider this film came out in 1968. I've seen sci-fi films from the 80's which didn't look as good.
But beyond the visual artistry, its amazing to me how Kubrick managed to make HAL 9000 a sympathetic and compelling character. He's basically a lens with a red light within a wall fixture but somehow, Kubrick made him much more than that.
This film more than any other really defined the Sci-Fi genre on the big screen IMHO.
