I'm sure I'll be seeing it at the movie theater.

I'm still surprised they didn't try and do it immediately after LOTR while they still had Hobbiton and Rivendell sets.

I would think it was because Jackson probably wanted to take a break for a while and wasn't he already committed to doing King Kong as his next film?

Justin Timberlake should play Bilbo because he's just so talented and cool and he would have that "connection" with younger audiences.

LOL! Seriously though, I would love for Ian Holm to play Bilbo again but he's just too old now.

They could recreate Ian Holm using CGI and get Andy Serkis to do all the motion capture stuff for him as well as Gollum. And all the Dwarves. And Gandalf. And Thranduil. And Smaug. Heck, they don't need anybody else!
Andy Serkis FTW!

The Hobbit, written by Tolkien in 1937, takes place many years before The Lord of the Rings and centers on young Bilbo Baggins, who, along with a group of dwarves and Gandalf the wizard, embark on a quest to steal the treasure of Smaug the dragon. The first movie will reportedly tell this story, while the second will show events immediately preceding the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring.

Ah, so now I see what the 2nd film will be. It will cover the time between Hobbit and LOTR. I'm not sure exactly what will happen in that film, though.

Wait a minute though, did Tolkein ever write anything for that time period between the Hobbit and LOTR? If not, I guess that means they'll be writing an original script for that second film.

Only what is said in LOTR about the time between, which isn't much.
