I think "The Golden Compass" bombed for two reasons.

1. The negative publicity it got where both the author of the book and the movie were accused of being anti-Christian.

2. The story really was overly complicated for most kids in my honest opinion.

I saw The Golden Compass and I really enjoyed it, thus why I'm surprised it did so badly at the box office. From what I understand there are two more movies to complete the story.

I saw the movie with two of my young cousins (both under the age of 10). I myself enjoyed the movie quite a bit but both of them kept fidgeting around after about an hour and after the movie was over one of them asked me what the story was all about but that she felt the big polar bear with the armor was "cool". LOL

I'll rent it later, like I did Narnia. I'm mildly interested only.

Er, I mean Golden Compass. I'll see XF2 in the theater, of course.

I have not seen Chronicles of Narnia but I get the impression that its a far superior film to Golden Compass.

The books are considered better. Plus the 2nd Narnia film comes out this summer I think, so no doubt it did great.

Here is a little comparison.

Golden Compass budget: 180 million US box office: 68 million
Chronicles of Narnia budget: 180 million US box office: 292 million
