Far Cry 2

Post by Softball »

Picked up my copy yesterday, but it's still sitting in the box. I am going to try and find some time this weekend to check it out, it looks fun.

Anyone that also got it start playing it yet? If so, is it what you expected?

With me getting my copy of CMSF: Marines, it's gonna be tough to find time to play both.

Jedi has started playing it and he says the performance of the graphics engine is excellent. He has most settings maxed out and at 1280x1024 resolution. I bought my copy via Steam but I haven't started it yet. All of the reviews I've read for FC 2 so far have been very favorable.

Modes

Four modes have been confirmed to be shipping with the game:

* Deathmatch
* Team Deathmatch
* Capture the Diamond - a slight variation of the standard Capture the Flag
* Uprising - Each team has a captain who must capture points across the map, with the assistance of his teammates. Once all points have been captured, the opposing captain must be assassinated to win the round.

Well, I like it.

The graphics engine is nice. Looks real good. I'm running it on a 2-yr-old pc with all settings maxed at 1920x1200 on Vista with DX10. Smooth like glass.

So far the story is interesting. I like the way it doles out the missions. Good structure.

Well shit, FC2 has DRM install limitations. *sigh*

I guess I better go read the DRM info for FC2 before I install it.

EDIT: I found this:

------------------------------
You have 5 activations on 3 separate PCs.

- Uninstalling the game “refunds” an activation. This process is called “revoke”, so as long as you complete proper uninstall you will be able to install the game an unlimited number of times on 3 systems.

- You can upgrade your computer as many time as you want (using our revoke system)

- Ubisoft is committed to the support of our games, and additional activations can be provided.

- Ubisoft is committed to the long term support of our games: you’ll always be able to play Far Cry 2.

-------------------------------

That's not so bad, I guess I'll go ahead an install it now.

Well one thing fe pc crashess and um you don't get to revoke. and when they ay upgrade how much a upgrade if a stick or ram means you have to uninstall thats a pain.

well, we'll all just have to get over it or quit playing pc games. This is the way it's going to be.

For me personally, the DRM install limit issue doesn't bother me. And like you said, we either get over it or we quit pc gaming and the first option is much more attractive to me!

so when you go to reinstall a game and it can't be installed it will not bother you, well it better. Its something you should keep up on and watch out for, as long as the installs can be reused on a different pc its not bad but at first for example with spore 3 installs TOTAL EVER idea was to far and people screaming about it got that changed to 5 and there word (as good as that is) they will get a system running where you can reclaim a install after it was uninstalled from a pc.

So ya we will have to love with it but it should concern you. Also people ripping games for console should concern you as hey go look at torrent sites there are games on turrent sire up to 3 weeks before official release for the 360. How long tll they start screwing with drm on the consoles and making it like some of the sony audio cd's where 1/2 the usic players in the world could not play them, well try buying a console game and it don't work just because. Its comming so trust me you should be HIGHLEY concerned asits here but they are going to far and you need to push back when it goes to far.

I played for about 2-3 hours so far, what an amazing game. I have unlocked a couple of weapons and skills so far. I love the Machete, such a deadly weapon, but you have to get in close. I have the AI set to Normal and they are somewhat predictable; they will try and flank you if you are spotted, but 75% of the time they just make a B-line for your position. Meh.

I have my graphics settings on HIGH with Bloom (yuck) turned off and I'm getting about 40 FPS. I am really liking the mystery of the story and I'm not really sure who is on who's side. If it looks like they are guarding something or they shoot at me, I kill it. Heh. I love the healing animations (Injecting yourself, pulling bullets out of your body, cauterizing a wound, etc...), it's kind of comical.

If you have played the original Far Cry, you will certainly like this one. They promised some features that didn't seem to make it into the game (Everything destructable = not true), but it's not a big deal really.

When I finish FC2 I will probably get Fallout 3 next.

"On the 28th of October, 2008, out of 87 reviews, the average rating stood at 2 stars from Amazon user ratings, due largely to complaints over the copyright protection system implemented within the game."

I was all excited about this game but after reading a lot of negative reviews on SimHQ and on Amazon I've decided to wait until the game drops in price.

Far Cry 2 is probably the best PC FPS game I've played since half-life 2 ... Better in fact, since Far Cry 2 is not on rails (even Crysis was on rails compared with Far Cry 2). Awesome game.

I wonder what kind of copy protection Fallout has also.

On the subject of Fallout 3, I was in DC at the main hub metro station (Metro Center) and the entire station was "skinned" in Fallout 3 paraphernalia. All the ads on the walls were of period products from the game and there were huge banners on all the walls. Was weird to see such a mainstream kinda place advertising for one single game ... not a system. Weird.
