I'm thinking about getting this space RTS. If I enjoyed games like Empire at War and Star Trek Armada, would you recommend Sins of a Solar Empire?

Yes, you would like it. Just be prepared for long gaming sessions, it is by no means a quick to play RTS. The good about it is that you can save MP COOP games. The bad thing about it is that there is no real campaign that you can play through (Unless they have added something with a patch, I haven't played it in a month or so).
Enough of us here have the game, so we could play some 3 vs 3 or 4 vs 4 in a multi-solar-system map. It would take many hours to finish it, but it would be quite fun.
Veg, Hondo, Buff, Gator, Jedi, and myself have the game as far as I know.

I am doing a map that I've been playing for about 19 hrs. total. One saturday I told myself one hour and ended up putting in 12. I created a map with very very long lanes and I do mean long (if I need calvary to save a planet it would take about an hour to get their). One other handicap is when you play very large planetary systems and you've maxed out your number of ships you are severly handicapped in defending your frontline planets and forget about trying to hold your solar system star in that situation.
Now I want to find the CD and finish that up, by the way I have to buy a new CD (only 20 bucks with the link they sent me but they didn't budge at all).

Now my daughter helped me to misplace my CD (She all of a sudden found a interest in all things round and with lots of color about the size of a softball), but for all you SINNERS they have a expansion pack coming
Sins of a Solar Empire:Entrenchment. I'm sure this will only make the game better but now I have to find the damn CD or buy one (as soon as I lay down the cash she will walk up to me and say daddy look). Here is the link for the official site advertised at sinsofasolarempire.com

if you read the story lines, there is one race that was running basiclay they never knew what from but there entire civilation was whiped out and they kept losing singles form some thing they drop when they leave a location. they leave a while alter no signal so they move on. But these signals are the only reason they knew the rest of there people where lost. Have to get you full story alter. anyway I am betting expansion will be that race coming in to kick but. I said that way back when to Softball that if expansion thats the race.
Edit found the story
Vasari
The Vasari are the only alien race in the game. The Vasari Empire was once the strongest in the galaxy, formed by peacefully assimilating primitive races and brutally crushing more advanced ones, turning the populations of both into "valued citizens". However, at some point they started losing contact with their worlds. At first, it was believed to be acts of rebellion, or the work of traitors, but as more worlds were lost, it became clear the situation was very serious. Fleets were sent to deal with the problem, but none of them ever returned, and the Vasari still had no clue as to the identity of the attacker. Finally, the Vasari recalled all of the available ships of their conquering fleet, the Dark Armada, and sent them all to the last planet they lost contact with. Only one battleship returned, literally falling apart, with its crew driven completely insane with fear. It was then that the Vasari Empire as a whole began to flee, leaving their home systems behind, stopping only to harvest resources, rebuild their population, and to drop warning beacons in order to determine how close behind the unknown enemy was. As they fled, the beacons fell silent one by one, prompting the Vasari to continue their journey. Arriving in TEC space, the Vasari began their routine of conquering in order to collect resources. The campaign went smoothly at first, with the TEC having forgotten all the ways of war, but the TEC recovered and after 10 years, the Vasari are in a complete deadlock, with still more and more of their warning beacons going dark.
edit
its not a expansion but a micro expansion
Entrenchment is the first micro-expansion for Sins of A Solar Empire, adding new structures, new technologies, and numerous other improvements to one of the most popular PC titles of 2008.
so no new race just some new toys dOH

I wish they would add the ability to make custom, multicolored, in-game icons like the NPC races have. The rainbow colors get kinda boring after a while. I wonder if anyone has even mentioned it to the developers? *shrug*

I found my copy, I was trying to hide my games from my daughter and hide them from myself. That dayum game shouldn't cost that much, it should fall into the $20 range by now since it came out what first quarter this year or was it last quarter 2007.

The game came in the mail last night and I installed it and played the first 3 tutorials. The graphics in this game are gorgeous and I love the interface and gameplay so far!
I'm glad I got it.

So I got to play my first online match of Sins last night. It was me and a friend against the A.I. and while I had a lot of fun, I also felt extremely overwhelmed trying to deal with all of the research and tech upgrades while also conducting space battles and trying to colonize other planets. Talk about information overload!

Yes, the game can be overwhelming. Once you learn how everything works, you should not feel that way.
One tactic in a MP COOP game is to have one team member focus on economy and the other on military. The economy focused player can send money to the military player and can build up a rather strong army. Then the military player can protect the economy player while they build up their military. Gator and I tried this one game, it worked pretty well.
Another way to rank up your ships fast is to play a game with Pirates turned on. Fight the Pirates over and over to rank up your cap ships.
