Still stuck on Lynn Minmei (not really , i thought Max's wife was a hottie)

Did you know they got the concept for this series from the movie .... "The Final Countdown" , with Kirk Douglas.

Robotech Scull Squadron:
Three U.S. Naval Aviation squadrons have used the name and insignia of the Jolly Roger: VF-17/VF-5B/VF-61, VF-84 (est. 1955), and VFA-103.

While these are distinctly different squadrons that have no lineal linkage, they all share the same Jolly Roger name, the skull and crossbones insignia and traditions.

was just talking about this last night while flyign with the 352nd, we did a series of "what if" Pearl Harbor missions. During the filming of that movie during one of the air scenes with the F14s and the Texan...er...I mean "Zero"....anyway the F14 is already slow with low "E" and he tries to high yoyo the Zero and stalls it coming over the top and then if you look close compressor stalls the right engine and almost puts it into the water.

VF-17 was the 1st and one of 2 Navy Corsair squadrons to retain the F4U until very late in the war. Both operated from land for their deployments. This is due to the myth that the Navy thought the F4U unsuited for carrier ops. Early on with the F4U-1 there was a problem with the oleo's (shocks) being way too stiff (thus cuasing huge bounces on landing) and the tendency of the plane to stall the left wing 1st and roll over on her back in low speed/high drag situations (you know like in landing configuration) but those problems were fixed and thus the Corsair was re-designated F4U-1a. VF-17 was to deploy on Bunker Hill CV-17 with the 17th air wing but when the ship got to Pearl, VF-17 was given a choice, change into F5F-3's (Hellcats) and remain with CV-17 or keep the Corsairs and deploy on land to the Solomons. This was really due to the fact that the Navy didnt have the parts and supplies for the Corsair in the Navy Parts Depot system (they had now 2 fighters, the Corsair and Hellcat) and keeping VF-17 supplied would be a big problem but, because almost all of the Corsair allotment was going to land based Marine squadrons, flying from land and using Marine ground elements would not be a problem. They kept their Corsairs and went on to fame and glory. VF-17 disbanded in April 1944.

VF-84 went into Combat in early '45 on CV-17 Bunker Hill under command of Rodger Hedrick (former XO of VF-17) and with permission from the navy, painted the jolly roger on their planes (F5F-5 Hellcats). On May 11, 1945, a kamikaze got through, hitting the Bunker Hill right below the island, killing most of the pilots in the ready room. Hedrick survived, but that was the end of Bunker Hill's combat tour. VF-84 was de-activated after the war only to be reformed in 1955 and now officially called the Jolly Rogers.

The Jolly Rogers last ride was IIRC in 2005 when they retired the F-14's. One of the interesting traditions of the Jolly Rogers is a glass case that sits in the ready room containing the skull and 2 femurs of a VF-17 pilot Ens. Jack Ernie, who was downed on the 1st combat tour who was found sitting in his cockpit of his downed Corsair in the jungle of Bouganville in the late 50's, his family donated the bones to the squadron. Those bones are now located with the Jolly Roger foundation waiting to be placed in the next ready room of the future.

**edited to add Ens. Jack Ernie name as the pilot whos bones they carry in the glass case

Yellow Dancer was a better singer. Even if he was a cross-dresser.

Tach is disappointed in the singer in robotech, besides the fact she was winey and a pain she had what 2 songs TOTAL for the entire series that go repeated over and over and over and broken record over and over
