Joss Whedon, creator of groundbreaking cult favorites "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Firefly," returns to television and reunites with fellow "Buffy" alumna Eliza Dushku for a thrilling new drama, DOLLHOUSE.

ECHO (Dushku) is an "Active," a member of a highly illegal and underground group who have had their personalities wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas. Confined to a secret facility known as the "Dollhouse," Echo and the other Actives including SIERRA and VICTOR, carry out engagements assigned by ADELLE, one of the Dollhouse leaders. The engagements cater to the wealthy, powerful and connected, and require the Actives to immerse themselves in all manner of scenarios - romantic, criminal, uplifting, dangerous, comical and the occasional "pro bono" good deed.

After each scenario, Echo, always under the watchful eye of her handler BOYD, returns to the mysterious Dollhouse where her thoughts, feelings and experiences are erased by TOPHER, the Dollhouse's genius programmer. Echo enters the next scenario with no memory of before. Or does she?

***

Who knows? It's Joss Whedon: Buffy, Angel, Firefly. It's on FOX - Firefly was on FOX. Firefly, as good as it was, lasted what? 5 minutes? (In dog years, that is.)

I'll definitely watch the pilot tonight and if I like what I see then I'll continue watching it.

Well, I thought they took a little too long getting into it - the whole 'perfect date' thing at the start, with the motorcycles and the dancing - but once they started on the kidnapping case it picked up. Interesting that she recognized that one kidnapper because he'd been involved with one of the people used in crafting her persona. Overall, I thought it was okay. Better than anything I've seen on Heroes in, like, ever. But then again, what isn't?

My Score: 3.5 out of 5 stars. I'll keep watching.

Anybody still watching this? If not, you missed last Friday's episode, and if you missed it, well, you've only got yourself to blame. I do think the series got off to a slow start, and the premise might be strange and off-putting to some, but the Dollhouse is more than just a high tech ho house, and the Dolls...

Of course, you could always watch it online. :)

Agent Ballard (Helo) kicks booty in this one. PDT_Armataz_01_36

I've been watching it ... Friday's was the best so far (I like echo's handler). I thought the setup for next week looks good too.

The only problems I have with Joss re-using actors from BSG (Baltar's defense attorney) and other series is that I forget if I am supposed to know them already or not. It's like they still contain the imprint of their previous character in their new role. Do you think Joss does that intentionally in Dollhouse given the premise? Sorta screwing with the viewer?

That, and I guess he just likes working with those actors.

Like how Nathan Fillion played a villain in the last season of Buffy, then he was Mal in Firefly. He was also in Whedon's wacky 'Dr Horrible's Singalong Blog' online thing. Likewise, Summer Glau and Gina Torres both appeared in the Angel series, then they were in Firefly. Amy Acker was Fred in the Angel series, now she's in Dollhouse, and of course, Eliza Dushku (Faith) is the star of Dollhouse.

Lots of the same staff on his shows, too: Tim Minear and Stephen DeKnight are Buffy/Angel folks now working on Dollhouse.

Tim Minear wrote a couple of episodes for the X-Files.

Mark Sheppard was Badger on Firefly and very memorable there, so much so I had a hard time thinking of him as Romo at first!

Echo's handler was in the 2 Matrix sequels, BTW, if anyone remembers them. He was the guy who "stole" Jada Smith from Larry Fishburne.

The guy playing Sierra's handler is well known to SF fans as Boone from the first season of Earth: Final Conflict, the first non-Star Trek Gene Roddenberry series to be greenlit, albeit years after his death.

Dollhouse got renewed for a second season of 13 episodes, albeit with a decreased budget. Whedon has stated the decreased budget won't affect the second season.
