what video cards did you guys end up going with, and what did youo have before? how would you compare performance and how much did you spend?

i know Gator had 8800GTX's sli'ed. do you still have them?

i think Buff just built a new pc too? what did you do?

before the upgrade i was actually running a 295gtx and the new pc has the new ati card. 5870 i think. haven't compared them. the 5870 is a single gpu and runs very quiet and cool and performs very well. was only $380 i think too.

oh, and yes, i still have the pair of 8800 cards. you want them?

what happened to the 295gtx?

i might want one of the 8800gtx's. gotta check my mainboard though. could be a good interim upgrade.

nothing happened to the 295 ... it's going to be in my second pc. Probably overkill for a media center pc, but it does have hdmi output.

I am running the 295GTX and it screams!! I can max out the graphics and FSAA in just about every game with blazing fast frame rates. The 3.0Ghz Core 2 Quad helps too. :D

i went with core i7 paired with my 5870 and 6GB RAM. Everything maxed, no issues.

VERY, very nice system Gator. Hopefully I'll be upgrading my video card before too long. CPU upgrade will be early next year.

I was going to build a new rig, but 10K in hail damage, a several month long fight with the Insurance carrier, my Mom doing one of her craters, and a partial kitchen remodel has pushed it back to next year. Plus I wanted Win7 to drop and all the hardware manuf. to get their drivers up to speed 1st.

Well thats a non issue buff, windows 7 is windows vista fixed, but they use the same driver set. So if the hardware is polished for vista its will be fine on windows 7. Hell even there 64 bit drivers are relay good now, so I am even going that way just need to take a day and format my system (pain in ass)

I am running Windows 7 64-bit with 8GB DDR3 RAM, no issues yet. I'm pretty happy with Windows 7 so far.

I have a core i7 and a gtx 280 and its killer. I dont have problems with any of the games we play. Id rather have a 295, but since I was buying one ea. for me and my wife the price was getting up there as it was...

The only issue I've had with Win 7 so far is that I had to update the version of Starforce that was installed from Lock On: Flaming Cliffs. I also had to modify the permissions to the Lock On folder so that Starforce would install successfully.

what about sli'ed 8800gtx's compared to a 275/280/295gtx's?

my mainboard does not support sli, so i would have to get a new one. for that money i wonder if i should:

-get an 8800gtx to sli and a new mainboard to support it
-get a newer video card

i am probably leaning to the latter.

in my opinion, my new ati 5870 ($380) is a better performer than my SLI 2x 8800GTX was. The price isn't close.

So Hammer, to answer your dilemma, I believe your "latter" option is indeed better in both performance and price.

my GTX260s were lightyears better than my 8800s and my 9800 cards it wasnt even funny, even in single mode. SLI was sick compaired to my old cards, and that was like a year ago......

is the 5870 the latest ati card? how does it compare to the nvidia lineup (if anyone knows)?

otherwise i might look at a 275gtx.

i did get a free cpu and mainboard that will do sli though (high end AMD cpu, not sure which right now - still have to bring it home).

they actually just released the 5890 which is a dual gpu version of the 5870 (a la the 295 was for nvidia).

The 5870 was (one month ago) "the fastest single-gpu card available." I think that was according to Maximum PC.

Speaking of new graphics cards:

Makes me jealous, especially since I'm replacing a GTX 280 with a GTX 280 (because I'm a putz if you haven't read my other post)

And here's a new one that actually exists...
