I suppose I'll chime in and say I'll be playing. I recently canceled my pre-order for the Star Wars Blu Ray movies, the main reason being that they will NOT be releasing the Original movies in their ORIGINAL theatrical format, but in the "extended" format. For Shame; I'll stick with my DVDs. As a result, I will be using that money toward the purchase of the CE edition of ToR. I have 3 months to save up $70 (70/3 = $23.33/month, not too bad) for the remaining balance, so no problem there.

Based on a gameplay video I saw a while back, the Republic classes match up very well with City of Heroes Hero classes/roles:

Jedi Knight: Scrapper
Jedi Consular: Controller
Smuggler: Defender (the smuggler had the heals!)
Trooper: Tanker

"No blasters! No blasters!'

They are missing an analogue for the blaster class. This should have been a starfighter pilot class, but alas. No idea how the Sith guys match up to Villains.

Anyway, I'll definitely give it a try. I'm thinking the first two characters I make will be a Jedi Consular and a Smuggler, even though I tend to prefer the Blaster and Tanker types.

I look forward to reading the reviews from you guys who are going to try out SW: TOR. I'm on the fence right now about this one.

So, this morning I decided to create an account over at the Star Wars: The Old Republic website. Along the way I was presented with the option to sign up for beta testing, so I did. Once the process was complete I was informed that I'd receive a 'validation email', at which point I would be able to log in to my account on the website.

So I waited for the validation email. Usually these things come along in short order. And I waited... and waited...

Meanwhile, I browsed some other forums and looked at stuff on Facebook. I played some Word Squared. I went out and mowed part of the lawn, got the front and sides done before the mower ran out of gas. Came back in and checked, and there was still no validation email. By this time it had been over three hours since I'd completed the registration.

Tried logging in. Nope. Can't log in until validated. Click here to send another validation email. Click.

Waited. Waited. Waited. No email.

After waiting another couple of hours, and trying a few more times to get the thing to send the email, I sent this message to the Star Wars: The Old Republic support folk:

"Hi - it's been four or five hours since I attempted to register an account here and I've still not received the verification email, which should have been sent to the email address shown above. I've checked all SPAM and trash folders, it's not there. What else can I do? Thanks."

Well. First thing they suggested I do was to check my spam folders. PDT_Armataz_01_19 Then they suggested I add a couple of email addresses to my safe senders list. I did that. Still no email. Their records of my account, they told me, showed that the validation email had been sent and delivered. Seven times! At one point they even claimed they saw a 'successful login'.

PDT_Armataz_01_05

Good trick, there, huh, considering I can't log in without the validation info, which I have not received.

They suggested the problem might be with with my ISP. I called my ISP, which is AT&T, and the nice tech lady checked it out and found no problems. Just to be sure, she also checked with the Yahoo email support team, who confirmed there were no problems with my email address/account.

I also tried making another account on the SW: TOR site using a different email address. Still waiting on that validation email, too.

So now my problem has been 'escalated' to a 'specialized team member' and they will be back in contact with me 'once they are in a position' to update me further.

They should give you a Beta account for your troubles. :)

Well, they came back this morning and suggested I try a gmail, yahoo, or hotmail account. Feh. Bellsouth/AT&T email pretty much IS Yahoo mail now, so I figured that wouldn't work. Didn't really want another email account. Don't like these danged web-based email things. Besides which, I already have SIX email addresses that work fine for everything else. But I went ahead and created a <bleep-a-rooni!> gmail account, and then tried making another SWTOR account - and got the <bleeping double bleep bleeping!> validation email almost instantly.

Feh!

But of course I couldn't use the name I originally wanted to use, because that name is evidently forevermore associated with an account that hasn't been and apparently cannot ever be validated.

FEH!

I have a bad feeling about this.

For whatever it's worth, I was able to register my preorder without any major issues. I received my confirmation email via Gmail in less than a minute. I could not use "Staark" as my account name as it was supposedly taken (grumbles), so I used Zoftball and it worked. Somehow the email for TOR accounts are linked to your EA account if you have one.

You reminded me of something. Are you ever going to accept my friend request in Games For Windows Live? LOL

That's another thing! The email address I used was the same one I used years ago when I played EA's The Sims 2 and Bioware's Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic! I still have emails from both companies on my old computer. So, it worked just fine back then...

I tried logging in on both sites, but evidently my old accounts are defunct. Even though I got an email from the VERY SAME email address used for the current SWTOR validation email back in **2009** suggesting that I check out SWTOR.

PDT_Armataz_01_28

The WORST thing about this experience: because I was able to register on the SWTOR website using a gmail account, the SWTOR support guys consider the problem solved.

It's not solved.

Using gmail circumvented the problem. It didn't solve the problem. The problem STILL EXISTS.

The Force is NOT with them.

I guess I would know that if I ever played a Windows Live game, lol. The only game I can remember that uses Windows Live is Warhammer 40K.

I believe it's $15.00 if you pay on a month by month basis.

Sorry to hear that you had all that singing up problems Tach. I sign up with my netscape account and had no problems. Netscape is now AOL of course, but I still use the @netscape.net and email still works. I sign up as Ghost-rlg. Ghost was taken. So softball did you try Staark-rlg? That may work. I say for all who sign up use your teamspeak name and add -rlg to the end and you should have your name with the new account. Just a thougnt.... PDT_Armataz_01_35

I wanted to sign up using the name 'Tan Hadron' - which is the name of a character from Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars books. That's what I used on my first - failed - attempt at signing up. According to the support guys, they can't transfer user names between accounts, so that name is forever lost - or lost until such time as unvalidated accounts are purged, which the support guys said might eventually happen. Someday. My second - also failed - attempt cost me the use of the name 'Dotar Sojat', also from the John Carter books.

Don't ask me why I was so keen on using names of characters from the John Carter books. I just was. I think maybe somewhere in the back of my mind there lurked a thought that there probably wouldn't have been a Star Wars if not for good old Edgar Rice Burroughs, who wrote A Princess of Mars waaaaay back in 1912. His wild and crazy novels of rollicking high adventure in assorted exotic places inspired lots of folks who came along later. So I guess I kinda felt like doing a little tribute there. (Also, a Barsoom MMO would RAWK. Imagine, if you will, a 15' tall green guy with four arms who could DUAL WIELD longbows or two-handed swords - or one of each! - or QUAD-WIELD longswords. Yes. I'd pre-order a Barsoom MMO in a heartbeat. As long as Cryptic was kept far, far away from it... possibly in another galaxy...)

Anyway. I wound up with the name Katharis, a name I made up years ago for a DnD character. It was originally 'Bram Katharis', and I think I used it for a psionicist character. I haven't checked yet, but it's probably someone's real name. Turns out almost every name I made up for the stories I used to write are actually real names of real people. Google, for example, the name 'Sanden'.

PDT_Armataz_01_08

Yup. Just checked: Katharis is all over the internet. Oh well.

Why didn't I use the name 'Tach Deneva', which was, ironically enough, a name I made up for a Star Wars PnP RPG character many years ago? Because, dag nabbit, he's an X-Wing pilot, and they ain't got no X-wings in The Old Republic!

Yes it is if you are a casual player who won't be playing it every day for hours on end like most MMO gamers. ;-)
