Just got one for my birthday yesterday and I absolutely love it!! As far as I've seen, it can do pretty much everything an iPad can do but for half the price.

There's the Fire LTE which has built in 4G and has a screen about the same size as the iPad but it's also 500 bucks!

personally I would be going after the google nexus 7. Not that I am bashing the fire, but the nexus 7 is as pure a android install you can get. Also apple is got a 7" tablet in the works.
Personally we have a Samsung galixy 10.1 at home. Viv company gave her the thing as christmas gift. Great device to have around for small games and to just grab and look stuff up.
