Spammery Infestation!

How are all those spammers getting in here? They're almost as bad as the bots in GW2!

they are humans, so there is not much to do about them unless someone wants to volunteer to administer all the forum registration requests.

When I see a name like 'aggdh8dgvdf' and 'wangjingjhg' I figure there's a spammer behind it, human or otherwise. 'zhengtiegu' on the other hand, is not as obvious, although he, she, or it has indeed turned out to be another spammer. How does the registration process work? It's been so long since I registered, I don't remember...

Is there any way to limit registration to people who are invited by existing members?

we could, but it would be manual. and we then run the risk of not letting people register that genuinely want to join up and game with us.

during registration, the person has to answer a fill in the blank question. this prevents all bots, but the answers are simple enough for humans.

I say implement that feature. If someone wants to join the forums, we can let you know about it; it will most likely be someone we know. This spam is getting ridiculous... I guess I'll go unsubscribe from the forums I am subscribed to. I'm getting emails for every spam post. Grrrr!

Probably a good idea for everyone here (who isn't a spammer, that is) to hide their email address and/or other contact information from other members, so these spammer guys can't get it. They'll spam you directly if they can AND they will try to use your email address to hack your game accounts.

I don't think your email address is revealed here. As a precaution, I changed my email listed here to my Nyms.net account. Forced me to re-activate my account, no big though.

Hammer, how about using a Captcha box for new accounts? I see you have a mathmatical equation in place, but it looks like that is static and I would think could easly be bypassed with a script / macro.

Im guessing these are not legit accounts:

Gonna go out on a limb and say those guys are NOT Real Life Gamers!

Something I was wondering - would it be possible to make the entire forum private - or 'read only' with no posting privileges - with the exception of a New Members area in which any actual Real Life Gamers could introduce themselves? Once they've established their bona fides, then you could let 'em in to the (queue spooky music)...

Forum spammers need to be shot. I frequent the Bear McCreary website forums and those get filled by stupid spam posts as well.

i was basically out last night, and they struck. just now finished cleaning them up. i am going to disable self registration until i get something else figured out, or just some time goes by and they forget about us.

captcha does not work, bots/scripts have cracked it. there are way more questions than just a mathematical problem. that is just the one you got when you tested. ;) the setup now ensures it is a human registering. there are just a lot of humans doing spam now.

yes, and sat quite in a dark corner until now. there may be a few others like that, but as of last night all registrations have to be approved by me.
