hey guys, I was doing my annual system clean up, thorough scan, defrag and such. Problem is the defrag prog says that it cannot defrag 21 percent of my HD. The files it cannot touch are in RVS, PF, and some other game folders, and a document in my doc folder. shrug. Don't know why it can't defrag properly. Any suggestions? anyone run into this problem before?

Try running a complete disk surface and integrity scan first and see if it finds any bad clusters. You should then be able to defrag afterwards.

Ok when I did a check disk, I went to c drive, properties, then tools. Checkdisk and let it run. Are you talking about a different systems check and if so how do I find and activate it? XP still throws me for a loop. Still learning.

I'm confused...it's telling you what files it can't defrag? I've never seen that before. Usually you just see green bars for the unmovables, blue for defragged and red for fragged.
The only thing is to make sure you have more than 15% of your HD free for defragging.

i asked the same thing. i have never seen defrag tell you what files are actually fragmented. the unmovable files are usually system files and are green.

also hard to believe you are at 21% fragmented - that is a LOT!

are you using standard windows, microsoft supplied defrag?

Yes. I am. The log indicated what files it was having problems with. As for 15 pecent of my HD freed up? I doubt I have that. I need to uninstall some progs. Actually I gotta drag Gerry over here to install that new HD you sent me Steel. He's been busy with work and unable to come sooner.

Myself, I use Diskeeper Lite. It can be d/lded for free, and I've found it always clears the fragmentation.
