Arlington Ceremony

On Monday, July 8th, my grandfather is being given a military burial at Arlington National Cemetary. Its at 1pm, but I'm not sure of the exact location. Any WOF in the VA/DC area are welcome to attend.

As a former member of the Honor Guard, let me assure you that your Grandfather will be given the most dignified ceremony he has undoubtedly earned. God be with you and your family.

Thanks for all the support! I spent the weekend at my grandfather's house with the rest of the family, and we cleaned up all the personal matters. While searching the basement, we found his old Navy files, including his Honorable Discharge statement (which we'll have to bring to the ceremony, just in case they check ID on him). I also found his flight logbook. Turns out he flew quite a few missions in the F-4U Corsair, although the majority of his flights were in the F8F (the first plane used by the Navy Blue Angels). Alot of the flights include combat training, including live rocket and bomb practices. Great stuff. He was a member of VF-192 for a while, I'll have to do some research on them.

The ceremony today was excellent. Full military honors. His ashes were placed in a temporary coffin with the draped flag, and driven by horse to the burial site. A full Naval Honor Guard was present as well, giving a musical tribute during the march. At the site, the flag was taken off and held over the ashes as the Naval Guard played TAPS and America the Beautiful. A 21 gun salute was also rendered. TAPS was very emotional for everyone, and especially me; coincidentally, an aircraft flew directly overhead right in the middle of it. The flag-folding ceremony was excellent as well, and my father received the flag. Outstanding ceremony by the Navy. His ashes were placed in Court 6 of Section 26 I believe. Thanks to everyone for the kind words.
