naval warfare gaming

Madrus (and anyone else interested),
Here is a site that is all about naval warfare, as well as some other types...

http://www.navalwarfare.net/content/index.html

They have a few projects going on, one of which is the modification of Jane's Fleet Command to add more realism, weapons and navies.

They also have another for Fighting Steel, a WW2 surface combat game...

Both of those games can be found in bargain bins or maybe used at EB.

While I am asking, is anyone else interested in other types of wargaming?

Yup - I know all about them... I have BCT and had its predecessor back when it was free...:)

Have you tried TacOps?

Don't have it, tried it way back when too... I am really into real time - adds more challenge - but it still is a good game. I thought about having a friend that was still in the Army get me their version...

Yah, I tried it and don't like it...

You might want to look at GI Combat - similar to Close Combat but 3d. There are a lot of mods for Close Combat series as well...

Must be them old eyes...

GI Combat has a demo you can try...gives enough feel of the game I think.

I had GI Combat, and returned it within 2 days. It needs A LOT of work IMO. Just not what I expected I guess. Take my advise, steer clear of GI Combat. Unless they make some serious improvements, I won't even bother.

I have Combat Mission 1 and 2, and I really like both of them. Yea, CM is not "Real Time" per say, but I think it is better off in SP mode. The map / mission editor is TOP NOTCH. You can do just about anything and everything with the map editor in CM, from hills, valleys, streams, bridges, buildings, destroyed buildings, walls, trees.......you name it.

I also have Close Combat 1, 2, 4 and 5. I could not find a copy of CC3, so I missed out on getting it. It's one of the best ones too. :( Those might be fun for some 1 vs 1 combat action.

I also have Fleet Command (Great game), but uninstalled it a long while back. I could not keep up with the updates. Everytime I turn around, they would have a new version and I would have to uninstall / reinstall. It's nice to have all the updates and added realism, but a new one every month was getting out of hand. What version are they up to now anyway, 16 or 17? The last version I had was version 12, and that's where it stopped for me.

Tried the Fighting Steel version 1.0 (6 months ago?), I see that they are up to version 7.0. I never really got into FS, just not my cup of tea I guess.

I have not tried the other RTS games you guys mentioned (BCT, ATF). Maybe they are worth looking into? What about Operational Art of War II + Expansion pack? I have those and enjoyed them back in the day.

I thought about getting REAL WAR, but I have heard nothing but bad reviews on it. It looks like fun, graphics are great, but I think I will wait to get it out of the bargain bins down the road.

I did not know the retail release of GI Combat was so bad. The demo seemed to play O.K., although I think the camera system is a bit botched.

I have CC4 and CC5... Did you know there are quite a few CC mods out? Most are for CC3, but 4 and 5 versions are being released.

I have Fleet Command, and I believe they are up to version 16 or so. You don't have to update to the latest version you know... Unless you are one of those that HAVE to have the latest and greatest!

I like Fighting Steel, but I feel there is an element missing with no carrier action. A lot of WW2 naval battles were at least heavily influenced by air elements... The mods they have done implement ships from WW1, so something like Jutland would be real cool! There is another simulation designed just for WW1 that might be better at it though...

The problem with the NWS stuff is that they rely heavily on yahoo groups/forums - that really sucks in my opinion... I am not sure if I can bring myself to create and account and join the groups...to get more info.

Real War is just another RTS... There is a demo for it, you can DL and try it. Those type of games do not do anything for me... BCT and ATF are NOT RTS games...they are real time wargames. No fancy graphics, just good old wargaming... There is a demo for ATF - check Shrapnel games...

They also have Austerlitz, of which I was on the beta team...

Sounds like I have some War Games to order. 8O

Hey Steel,

I have a friend that is seriously thinking about getting Austerlitz. In your honest opinion, is it worth getting? He is not sure about getting it because it is online ordering only, and does not want to get burned if it not GOOD good. Do you know if there is a demo for Austerlitz somewhere so he can check it out?

Thanks for any info.

If you like Napoleonics - get it. Probably Waterloo too, if you can still find it.

All you friend has to do is look at the info page for the game and find the link to the demo...

Thanks for the info Steel. Will let my friend know about the demo.

Have you tried or heard anything about Remote Assault?

How about Armored Task Force? If you had the choice, would you get ATF or BCT? Is ATF the same as BCT but newer with additional units? Or am I barking up 2 different trees?

ATF is the new version of BCT... I does have fancier graphics than BCT, but you can prolly get BCT cheaper right now... You can prolly get the demo of each and try...for a comparo.
