Post by VEGETA »

Well buff myself and other had talked this one out before in HS but hey now we in ELH so hey. The idea, make a page for members do display there battletech minies. There painted ones, just for the share helll of it. Rather small work required to add this . Display your minies, any takers

Hey Veg,

I like that idea. I don't have a lot of painted minis but I have a few that are pretty decent and my dig. cam can take decent macro shots. I still play about once/month with some friends of mine & I could take some pics of our battles and show them too. We played yesterday, a rather large scenario of Dracs vs. Ghost Bear on icy terrain. We didn't get to finish the fight but the Bears won by the amount of victory points at the time we quit. It could have gone the other way if we had played a little longer though. It was a good scenario though- we have one guy who does a real good job of working them up.

well...PHPWebservices has a portfolio system that I can prolly set up for you all to use...

Check it out here...

http://www.phpwebservices.com/helmut/pics/portfolio.php

This is version 1 and is somewhat crude, but gives the basic functionality. Version is is MUCH sweeter... My issue right now is disk space on my server, once that is figured out it is a go...

Benn...too late!

I am glad to know I was not the only geek around that played D&D...:) I can prolly outdo you on the miniatures though - I used to paint armies for Napoleonics! Both 15mm and 25mm... I was so masochistic, I used to paint for others as well...!!!

Guns huh? We should hook up! But it seems your are more along the lines of hunting??? I don't do that. I do collect military firearms though... I am considering Cowboy Action Shooting since my girlfreind actually expressed some interest in it... She told me last weekend she wanted me to teach her how to shoot!!! COOL!!! :D

I think I have some thing that could make you give up paintball though... Interested? :)

BB, i think i have some links you might like...WWII you say??

There is some great WWII pilot stories can be found on:
http://www.elknet.pl/acestory/aces.htm

There is also a free game available at www.wbfree.net which is an online WWII flying thing. You join Red or Golds and battle to take control of each others airbases. The game uses all of the original planes that were about at that time and it follows the same timeline as WWII over a 22 day (i think) period. Have a look/see.....its not that big a d/l if you have cable modem, about 70 odd mb for the files you will need.

Well Veg might be overstating my painting abilities. I have some that I think are very good and some that are horrid and are sceduled to be stripped. Malin sent me some unseen mechs he had around the house (2 Warhammers, Archer, Battlemaster and a Marader) that all have been stripped. I use Acetone for stripping mechs painted with enamel (of which it seemed like those from Malin were) and Lemon Fresh Pine-Sol brand. Makes acrylic paint sluff off in sheets with a little cold water and some slight scrubbing with a old tooth brush. Also gives the mech that fresh lemony smell. Acetone is obnoxious and hidious on your fingers but kicks the crap out of enamel and CA type glues in about 12 hrs. You can also use Acetone for acryilic, but it is not as effective as the Pine-Sol.

Not sure why I'm doing all this but several people have asked me about some of the stuff I do to my minis paint and sealer wise so....I'll just write them down here. All of these are ideas and such i have got from mech painters who paint and post to LOTB and actual Ironwind Metals staff.

Primer = Krylon sandable primer. Comes in white, black, grey, and that annoying red/rust color you see on crappy cars. It's a 3rd the price of Gamers Workshop primer and can be found at any Wal-Mart type store in the US....not sure what the hell the UK guys have store wise.

Paint = I use craft acryilc paints you can get at locatiosn like Hobby Lobby or Michales Hobby/Crafts stores. the brand name is "FolkArt" and they are about $.99 for 2 fl/oz. Good range of military type colors. Ther is also a brand called "Apple Barrel" that seem to be the same but the colors are more "Crafty". If you dont thin these paints out a bit the pigment load is huge. I cut mine down some with "Majic Wash" or rubbing alchoal. For the "Magic Wash" see below.

Magic Wash = 3 parts water 1 part "Future Floor Finish". It's not a wax but an acrylic medium. I use this to thin the paint down and to make ink washes for detailing the mechs. For mixing ratios your just going to have to play with it some on a crap mech. Ink wash should flow easaly into armor lines etc. and mostly dry clear on the flat raised surfaces. If the mech looks all black when you brush it on you have too much paint and not enough wash liquid. Overall it will give the mech a grimmy appearence which I think is a more natural look.

For exhast and debris I dry brush on the color I need for the effect I am going for. Black for example on LRM ports. Also I do give the mech a light drybrush of lt. grey or similar color to give it that used look.

Sealer = Krylon Triple Thick Glaze. This stuff rocks. gives mech a un cool shinny exterior but we will deal wit that in a sec. I do once coat of this stuff to seal the paint on the mini. At this point some may like to bake their paint on using the oven but I have yet to go down that road.

I decal the mech (with ELH decals of course) and then once the decals are set I seal it all with Testors Dull Coat to knock the shine off and cover the decals. I have one of malins Battlemaster and Warhammer ready for detail so maybe tonight I'll throw a pic up to show some stuff. Then you can throw tomatoes and stuff at me and laugh insanely!

Ben - yah - D&D...:) I did the same thing!

Guns - well, what can ya say? Guns are feakin' cool! I should take some pics of what I have and get them up on the web. I collect somewhat unusual stuff with a bit of firearms history to them - WW2 stuff and later.

Yes, Airsoft. I am going to play in a big event the weekend of the 25th... http://www.operationlionclaws.com I am one of the Lt's in Col. McNights company. Airsoft is all about milsim... The guns are created to look like the real thing. Most of them are electric, with a motor that drives a piston to shoot 6mm plastic bb's. Hits are all honor system, so I feel it is a cut above the paintball as far as ethics goes. Yeah, there are cheaters, but they get weeded out pretty quickly.

Go to this page and scroll down a bit - it gives a somewhat generic overview:

http://www.airsoftus.com/

I am also a big WW2 buff... It would be cool to have enough different types of airsoft guns to do a WW2 battle recreation... I used to do WW2 re-enactment just before I went into the Army... I have played lots of miniatures (still have some around, 1:385th scale micro-armor) with Tractics rule sets, squad leader, Close Combat series, Panzer Blitx, Panzer Leader, yada, yada...

:D!

I don't know... I have heard the SA80 is not that accurate, of course I have no way to substantiate this. L1's were/are sweet! I am plagued by idiotic politicians here in CA, can not get any rifle with a pistol grip or thumbhole stock (else I would have a Dragunov - now THOSE are sweet!). I can not even get an SKS if it has a grenade launcher!!! You know, I might just go get me some rifle launched grenades (also illegal - don't even know where I would find one) and blow someting up.

AAAARRRRGGGHHHHH!!!!!

No, no Garand yet... One of the next few purchases... I am getting whatever handguns I can this year because no one knows what stupid laws are going to go into effect at the new year...

Next purchase will be a couple of Walther P99's...

There is an Albanian SKS I might consider - I think it has no grenade launcher so I might be able to get it...

I figure Garands are in the CMP and have to be pretty sacred, but we will see... :( Should be able to get one of those next year. Then an M1A after that...

That L1 has to be nice!!! :)

I have two extremely nice Garands, a very nice M1 Carbine, a nice BAR, two Thompson SMG's, a Navy and an Army pattern all in my museum. I have over 250 nice toys. They all talk to me when we are alone.

Steel, the SA80 is an extremely accurate 5.56 firing the SS109 round. The only problem with the SA80 is its basically a crap design. The furniture is weak, the weight is up there with an L1A1 or higher, its butt heavy, you can't fire it left handed and you have to clean it once every 10 minutes. It is, if working, probably the most accurate 5.56 I have ever fired tho. That includes the G36, M16A2's. You forget what my day job is? Steel old mate.

Lancer lives in England, and he is an armorer... A dream job for some of us, except for fixing all the stupid "mistakes" the run-of-the-mill end-user can do to a weapon.

Interesting on the SA80... You would think if "they" would make something so accurate the rest of the package would be of enough quality to make is useful...

Nice collection, but really - I thought all that stuff was illegal there? Are these all in the armory, or really yours? BAR=drool... :)
