Windows went Ka-Blooey

But I managed to fix it by uninstalling/reinstalling Sygate Personal Firewall, which had evidently suffered some serious file corruption (no doubt due to the numerous crashes caused by Buff's favorite communications program, TS2).
I also had to uninstall/reinstall various other programs to restore them to functional status.

BTW, TS2 RC2 seems more stable than RC1. It hasn't crashed yet, anyway, although Mercs has been crashing a lot on its own lately (perhaps due to the afore-mentioned file corruptions).

Tach,
I haven't been around since midlast week, but I hope you have those problems at bay now. I recently experienced some problems with TS2. A lot of times, it can't find any of outr servers though I guess they aren't always working. The worst problem happens when I have started Mercs first, then minimize it to start up TS2. When I do get TS2 to work, sometimes when I hit the Mercs button to open it up, the button expands but then Mercs just disappears. It won't restart and usually I need a complete reboot to get it going. If I remember to launch TS2 first, and stay in Mercs I don't have that problem. You ever experience anything like that?
Anyone going to be in the fort tonight?

I Have Firemane , Not the same exact problems you have but I have noticed that when opening TS first and then Launching Merc. I’ll have lost my hot key when going back to TS. Also , I noticed that I couldn’t join a Merc. game a few times with out closing TS first. Well ,… It’s a good thing me and the 19th Cavalry know how to type during a game heh. For me , I’d rather have fun playing the game instead of trying to get it working with comms. But that’s just me. I recall we also had problems using RW and B-Com too back in the days. Nothing like this tho , where we have 4 TS servers going .
Yes I say 4 because no one let me know the other 2 were obsolete. Or are they ?

I used to always start Mercs first, then check the Fort to see if anyone was on, and if so, then I'd start TS2. All too often, TS2 would simply freeze. The cursor would change to a | , and Mercs would be frozen, too, and the only way to get them shut down would be to CTRL-ALT-DEL them, and then - not every time, but evidently one too many times - the OS would freeze, requiring a Power Off (without shutting down Windows first). Bad Mojo, which eventually resulted in corrupted files that:
1. Prevented Windows Media Player from running.
2. Prevented Outlook Express from running.
3. DX9 errors with DirectPlay.
Windows System Information reported Registry errors, and offered to repair them. The repair did this:
1. Norton AV would not start properly at boot.
2. IE6 and OE6 reverted to IE5.5 and OE5.5
3. DX9 reverted to DX8.1
4. Sygate Personal Firewall would not run.
5. Internet access impossible due to locked ports.
Note that I did NOT run System Restore. All I did was click OKAY when WSI asked if I wanted to repair the Registry errors. After some creative cursing, I finally figured out that the locked ports were locked because of corrupted firewall files. Once I uninstalled/reinstalled Sygate, the ports were unlocked and I could once again connect to the Internet. Strangely enough, OE6 was restored, but IE remained 5.5 and DX remained 8.1. I re-upgraded to IE6 and DX9. I also had to uninstall/reinstall EnterNet 300 (I use it to connect when I want to play Mercs, othewise I can get on ZoneMatch but can't Join a game).
OE6 kept giving me authentication errors - and then I noticed that all my Bellsouth email accounts were gone, replaced by previously deleted (and inactive) Mikrotec email accounts. All my mail filters were gone as well. I fixed all that, then started working on the network settings, which eventually required a reboot.
At that point, Windows would not start. Not even in Safe Mode. I decided to try one last thing, and if it didn't work, I was going to go get Win XP and rebuild my triple-boot system from scratch.
I booted up Mandrake Linux 9.0, and using the File Manager in Super User Mode, I went to the Windows folder and renamed a couple of files...
...then Windows booted up nice as you please and has been malfunctioning properly ever since (although I suspect there are still problems with Word).
Anyway, TS2 RC2 has not crashed yet. It may not be any better in any other way than TS2 RC1, but the not crashing part is, IMO, a BIG improvement. Of course, now I start TS2 FIRST (then jump from one TS2 server to another trying to find eveybody).
About the TS2 servers, as far as I know there are three of em: MD's, elhserver, and elhcomms. I think elhcomms is still running TS2 RC1, but I'm not sure. I'm not too keen on firing up TS2 RC1 anymore, as I don't want to risk it crashing again and trashing my PC.
