thanks for the post Tach, getting a bit discoraged here about the whole thing. will do what the suggestions say so far and see, but i hope they come up with something better lol.

well i tried some of the things mentioned. starting with trying to adjust settings again or creating new one. and low and behold when mercs tied to load, the screen would go black and then everything would just freeze..... well, not knowing what the hell was going on i uninstalled the whole game. removed all mechwarrior 4 mercs references in folders and registry and reinstalled the damn thing.... same exact thing. black screen then puter freeze. i checked all my drivers, installed new vidio driver, tried DX9 etc and still same thing. so i think my game went from dislikeing me to total dispising me now...

any clues folks?

sorry Bullseye its still a no go. becuse it happens after the autoconfig and the accept legal BS box.

so here is the detailed thingy.

installed mw4M
ran MW4M
screen went black
went back to desktop
autoconfig box pops up
clicked continue
legal BS box pops up
clicked accept
screen goes black again
i get the funky upside down V cursor in center of black screen and then nada. its frozen, cant even alt tab out. it locks the whole system up

im running windows XP pro
i updated all vidio drivers
DX9 was installed due to Homeworld 2

i wounder if it would still run if i installed 8.1 again?

anyhow, thats it in a nut shell.

Interesting this one BH. I'm running XP Pro and DX9.

I loaded the following in this order,

MW Veng
MW BK
Clan Pak
IS Pak
MW Mercs (this refused to load so gave up on it)

Result, MW Veng/BK, nothing else, even though the paks show up on the opening screen! Uninstalled the lot then tried

MW Mercs
MW Veng
MW BK
Clan Pak
IS Pak

exacatly the same result

Uninstalled the lot again!

have you tried dropping in-game graphics to the basement(or match windows resolution, whichever is higher)? Say if your Desktop is 840x600(or whatever), make your game display settings the same. Sounds like a problem I had a couple of years ago, or the last time I played 'Mech(whichever was more recent).

Hmm, I'm running XP Pro with DX9. I don't have Veng or BK installed. Just Mercs, the mech packs, the PR1 patch, and all the wacky maps. No troubles running the game, but I did have trouble at first cuz XP didn't want to let me run Mercs as a regular user. I set up a Power User account and it's been okay ever since.

hmm well. i tried dropping my graphics to the lowest possible.

my winXP account is a administrator status

i never had problems with mercs or any mech product before realy. i dont have a clue what caused this new thing.
one day the game worked just fine except for Zonematch. but i could join IP games ok.--- the next day WHAMMY! it does what i discribe above. i have never had a problem like this being so stubborn. the only thing i can figure what i might be is some of the security patches from MSupdate?

make sure after you unload mercs and the mech packs......that you also kill the C/Dilla file in your root C: directory.

i realy dont know what the problem is. the card is not that old its a Gforce MX 440 card with 64 Mram

all other games seem to run ok. even homeworld 2. ive tried to go the lowest settings in 16 bit and still nothing. this weekend im going to strip mw4m out of the puter again and make sure the CDs are REALY clean and see if it wont happen to work. i realy want to get on zonematch and get my piloting shoes back on and see if i still 'got it' or not. its just realy weird how i realy havnt dont anything while i was offline such as instaling or anything. i coudlnt get online to update anything. just played a few games like morrwind and stuff. then i get online and zone match wouldnt work and now this. nothing is configured different. no hardware is changed. im just plain stumped.

hmm after trying to clean off HD and getting ready to install i notice a heafty scracth on CD2 on the outer rim. keep in mind this is my second install of mw4m becuse i was trying to fix the zonematch thing before and this install wouldnt even load right? i think this may be why. perhaps it just lost just enough functional code to destroy the program or something, i dont realy know. might try to buy one of those CD buffers on pay day and was woundring if anyone has had any experiance with em and if they actualy work ?

meanwhile im going to try some other stuff. i did back up all my mw4 and mercs installs on CD. i just copied the files as they set on the hard drive. if i can happen to find what file is bad, then maybe i can replace it with that one?

well i used my ISO of mw4m cd2 during this install... still teh same thing so i doubt its the CD

so that leaves DX9 problems maybe?

well anyone know how to get rid of the damn thing? i would hate to have to reformat becuse of all the garbage i got on this thing....

i looked up forum on the net about this subject and scaned the dropshipcommand forums on DX9 issues and someone said something about a 3rd party app to roll back DX but cant seem to find it on the net. anyone heard of it?

im not sure what to do at this point...

DX9.1 might work with it, i should of known not to use a .00 application! uhg...

and just so you all get it !!

it looks like it was caused by a audio codec i installed to play movies and such.

if you want to continue playing mech4mercs i suggest heavily you DONT DL the codecs here http://www.morgan-multimedia.com/

for some reason it messed up the microsoft audio compression so the game was hanging on the sounds made by the movies and menu functions...

i spend all damn day working on this!

for a fix....

i did what i used to do in the past, i know its not recomended but seems to fix most of the things i screw up most of the time. i overlaid windowsXP over my current install. so basicly installed over the top of it. so i got ot keep all my settings and game installs and regestry etc. the only thing it did was overwrite the windows stuff that was changed. so in essence it overwrote the bunk audio codec i installed over by this codec pack.

as im sitting right now, i got the basic mw4mercs installed, no mech packs and no patch, no mapps etc.

next step is install mechpacks and PR1 patch
then maps.

soooo...
anyone got a current list of maps that are defently needed?

i know of the NBT thingies. is it just the alpha pack and the old battle grounds or is it more?
