Whee

Yesterday morning, my DSL modem quit working, possibly due to lightning, I dunno. Anyway, my ISP said they'd send a replacement overnight - for around $160 (including shipping). I thought I might be able to buy a DSL modem locally for much less, but of course the one place near here that has PC stuff had everything BUT a DSL modem (this after I called first and they said they had one for $79). Anyway, I got the one from my ISP...
And in Mandrake Linux, the new modem worked right out of the box. Windows XP, however, is evidently gonna take some tweaking. Figures. So, whee!
TD
ps: Got it. Whee x2!

And that’s one of the reasons why I like TD .
Whelp okay , my turn . Today I drove by an old 16 cubic inch refrigerator that was out on the curb waving to me . I thought I heard it calling after me as I kept going down the hill to get my breakfast burrito this morning . Well I was thinking , where would I put it ? ? Heck , I guess I could squeeze it in my garage somewhere . And I probably could use another one now since I threw out my little garage fridge last year.
When I came by later in the day , the lady of the house came out to the driveway and told me to take it. Said it kept frosting up all the time , so she wanted rid of it. After a quick look , I realized the door molding was binding up , so I decided to take it home and have a lookie. A few beers later and some live Ozzy and Floyd over the radio ( they were playing the entire albums ) , I was able to repair the door molding and now the fridge works great ! I added a picture and a few stickers on the door. There was My highlight of the day and now things are hunky-dory. So Wa Hooo Yip Yip Yipieeee or something like that .
I also had a chance to install my computer case this morning . It’s black and is one of them see through types. A little surprise I got when I started it up was , I noticed that the two fans have neon lights. Nice.

hehe those lights help your PC go faster ;) hehe you know its the same principle as crome on engines in cars
actualy i just have a cold neon in my case right now, but im trying to think up a way to get a the hard drive lights to activate a light inside the case, since the way my PC is sitting on the desk i dont have clear line of site to the HD led light on the front of the case.
on a different note, the wife and i just got back from our anniversary trip around central oregon, was pretty cool. we visited the ice caves, a nice constant 42 degrees and a mile long one way.
http://img64.photobucket.com/albums/v19 ... 801052.jpg
and then returned to the surface of a nice toasty 106 degrees. after that we did a nice little hike on a obsidian flow complete with both brown and white pumise stone.
http://img64.photobucket.com/albums/v19 ... 801060.jpg
http://img64.photobucket.com/albums/v19 ... 801065.jpg
http://img64.photobucket.com/albums/v19 ... 801063.jpg
during the 3/4 mile treck, it decided to do some thunder and lightning a bit which made the experiance on the obsidian flow realy cool
we got back to the truck just in time for it to rain, a few minutes later and about 5 miles down the road the rain had some hail mixed in.... the point is, only in oregon can you fry, freeze, fry, freeze and fry again in about 6 hours LOL. was a good trip.

Well if it was hot one minute and raining the next with icy hail hitting your windshield to boot , I’d be looking for some Twisters in the area hehe. But that’s something Brons would know more about ( in that area ) then I . Sounds a bit crazy but , I’d actually like to see one of those in person in my life time . Well that and Aliens. TD's gots me beat on the later tho.
The duel fans actually help my CPU keep cooler “ and go faster “ Plus they do look cool ( like chrome on an engine heh : ) With the lights I can also see what’s going on in there. I don’t need to turn the computer case around to see if the either net card is on any more. I can see the green light easy enough now . Maybe they have computer case fans for sale that come with neon lights ? I know they have computer case fans for sale , I’m just not sure about the later. I’d try that first maybe.
Thanks for the pictures BH
Say that reminds me about the time I was living up in Redding California. We stayed up there for over a year and saw lots of places. Never stayed at the home stead too much while I was around and had someone to go places with. We were always going places up there including the Caves up at Lake Shasta. I had to tell my spouse to get a hold of her self as we crept down in the cooler caves. She was freaking out in the dark a bit heh : ) I got a few pictures of me from up there if I can find them. I’ll scan them when I have a chance and post them up. I was allot heavier then , ( 215 lb’s ) and maybe a lot happier . We also went to Lassen Volcano Park. We Hiked up a long a trail ( that looked much like the one in your photos ) while passing by bubbling sulfur water pits. It was kewl.
Sorry you had to pay so much for a modem TD . I could have bought one for you here and shipped it on over to ya for about half the price. Our DSL company ( when we had it ) also wanted a large amount for their modems. Plus our Cable company is as greedy as well. About 70 bucks would by a new one easy. Is there a Best Buy or Comp USA near by ? They have good modems there and also ship modems online np. Maybe you can get one online and send your other modem back? Just a thought.
Oh , and strap a lightning rod on your house will ya.

Sorry to hear about your modem, Tach. Glad you got it working but sorry they gouged you. I use NewEgg.com for most of my comp stuff- good prices on most items and when they say it's in stock, they mean it. I think the regular shipping is 2 day but I assume you can pay more for overnight. <S>

Howdy all.
Longtime.
Sounds like we're all having modem trials. I've changed suppliers from BT (British Telecom) where I had an ADSL 512 connection for £35 a month to Telewest (Cable) where I've got a 1.5MB link for £33 a month.
Problem seems to be the cable modem (a Motorola Surfboard 4200) dosn't like long periods of continous use which is really annoying for online gaming!
Every 40 minutes or so the darn thing just stops and I have to restart to reconnect.
Sigh...
Malin
But on a lighter note taking the wife and kids to Blackpool next week, which whilst not as scenic as your trips should be good fun.
Anyone here looking forward to World of Warcraft??

I have had a Motorola Surfboard 4100 for the last year and a one half now. Mainly the only time I was on line so much was when I was downloading all night. I’d just start a bunch of downloads and hit the sack .
.....
Mine still woks Perfect today and Im happy with it. There was a time it started to disconnect on me a few months ago tho. That’s when I had this Virus called the something - or –a - rather. Sorry , cant think of it's name right now. But anyway the Virus was shutting off my isp connection about every 10 to 25 minutes while trying to update windows. I was annoyed

I got a SB4100 as well and it seems great so far. i think the disconnects are more the ISP rather then the cable modem itself. the only problems i had were due to the cable company going threw upgrades or something... then for a week i had a problem with the company giving my my lease for my modem. that was more of a disconnect, then the modem would try for a half hour to reconnect. they fixed it though and been fine since. i wounder whats realy different between the 4100 and the 4200? hmm i wounder if there is a flash out there for a fix maybe for ya Malin?

Theres a driver update via Windows update but I finally figured out the only way to install it is to uninstall the modem then apply the patch.......
On top of this my browser appears to have been hijacked!! If I click on a link that opens a new window it gets redirected to a porn site, S&D and Adaware and AVG say theres nothing wrong but there is definitly something there because my config says my browser is now Mozilla and not IE6. Any ideas on how I can get rid of it?

Last time i had adware problems i used this little application called bazooka.
http://www.kephyr.com/spywarescanner/in ... e=appvisit
it dosnt remove it for you however it does seem to find the big nasties and then send you to a web page telling you how to get rid of it all. it is time consuming, but i did what it said and cleared mine up. i just did a few things each day after work, so it took me a few days hehe.

Thanks BH, from that I got directed to a program called Hijack This which removed the thing taking over my browser.
I can now let me son back on the PC without the fear of him getting redirected to porn sites everytime he clicks on a link.

<S> Mal. Get yourself a prog called Spy Sweeper by Webroot. Stops all these nasty little hijackers and adwares in their tracks. Wizard and I spent nearly 6 hours trying to remove a porn/gambling site hijacker off of Beowulfs PC a couple of weeks back. Spy Sweeper is well worth the money.

Ya, I'm using Spybot Search & Destroy and Adware 6 at the mo along with AVG and Zonealarm but none of them picked it up which was really annoying.

I got tired of IE getting highjacked and loaded up with spyware. I'm even running Norton AV, Spy Bot S&D, Adaware6 Pro, Spy Sweeper and I still would get infected.
So..........................
I D/L Mozilla Firefox 0.9 beta and in 4 weeks I have had.....hmmm...oh thats right, ZERO highjacks, popups, redirects and spyware snooping because it is not based on IE swiss cheese architecture.
Just google mozilla firefox and D/L for free. I works....trust me.

I tried Firefox some time ago (when they were still calling it Phoenix). It showed lotsa promise then, so I'd guess it's even better now.
I do most of my web browsing when I'm running Mandrake Linux, tho, using the KDE desktop and the Konqueror web browser (and occasionally Mozilla), so I don't have to worry about hijacking or spyware or viruses or popups or any of that crap.
You guys should ditch Outlook Express, too, if yer using it, or at least set it for TEXT ONLY with no preview pane. Plain text is, well, plain, but without HTML in your email you're much safer.
