Saying goodbye

In a few hours, I'm going to have to take the most important woman in my life to Baltimore-Washington International Airport, where she'll be travelling to Fort Sam Houston on orders with the United States Army. The first time she left, it was for six months. Now, its for a full year, at least. Over break I finally realized I may be in love with this girl...and I have to say goodbye.
Has anyone had to do this before?

Many a time in your life this moment will rear it's ugly head - how you deal with it is what separates you from the hordes.
I have said goodbye to my now wife over the last 12 years not knowing I would ever see her again, and wondering if I was making the right choice - finally through several turns of events I stood up for what I believed in and got what I wanted!
Just keep the faith brother!

It is not just being young or old...this can happen to anyone that has made particular career choices. This is one of the most difficult things I have had to do, and like Kodiak I have had to do so several times. The uncertainty that comes with not knowing if you will ever see that person again is often overwhelming. The only thing you can do is tell her how you feel, let her go, and take it from there. She is a very selfless person to have chosen the career she has, respect that and support her and it will pay off...
In my case I listened to a selfish person and chose not to go in one instance. Making that choice, thinking of course it was the right thing to do as it was volunteer only, stopped me from having the other "career" I wanted. It haunts me to this day that I stayed and the person I stayed for left me anyway. I am happy with what I do now and where I am at, but I know in my heart I was born to the other way of life. So the moral is as I stated, respect what she has chosen and support her and it will pay immense dividends, even if it keeps you apart.

FWIW, if many of you do not know several ANG Infantry units have been called up as well as portions of the 19th and 20th SFOG's...as well.

I could provide more speculative info - but I won't, and you all know why.

Viper, I'm kinda the same way. This girl and I dated for a too-short 3 months about 2 years ago, and never got together since. But being with her over break made me realize exactly who it was standing in front of me. When I told her how I felt two days ago, she said she didn't want to go. But she did make the committment, and needs to go away for a year. I know that after that year, I'll still be in college for another two, and then on active duty for 10 more...it kills me to think about the future that way. I know how she feels, she knows how I feel...and we both feel kinda cheated, in a way. But like you guys said, thats the path we both chose, and we have to live with it...I hope that in the future our paths cross on a more parallel course.
