OK, yet another post with nothing to do with Mechwarrior. Y'all can complain to me about it later, my breath is still taken away when I think about this.
I live in central Tennessee for anyone who doesnt know and we went to South Carolina for Christmas, returning last night, about a 6 hour trip. On the Smokey Mountains half way point we lost the water pump. Christmas on top the mountains, not a good place or good timing as nothing is open. We had water and antifreeze in the car which was a plus and pretty much of the upside of the mountains were over, a major plus. After adding fluids to the van, we tripped to the nearest place with light and water we could find, a rest stop. We now had it confirmed it was most likely the water pump and we were just inside Tennessee. We made several stops to add water, still driving gingerly and keeping a Very close eye on the temperature, though we had little to no heat in the van at all. Just outside Knoxville - a stop to add water we found the water steaming on the battery had it bulging and steaming as well, made things very tense in the van. We continued to limp forward and made the final freeway turnoff, 5 miles from home. No heat for miles and very cranky people, we lost the main belt. The battery warning light went on and the lights all dimmed, no power features would work either with a few sharp turns to go in the van. Although we had 2 cell phones with us it was little good now. There is no service from that point of the freeway to home. If the van died walking the rest of the way would be our only option. The light getting dimmer by the seconds and our road in sight. No powerbrakes and the sharpest turn ahead, we made it, then to home. I know I was holding my breath as we saw the house, and we made it as well. Four hours of wondering if we would make it home and we were there. I know if we had lived even one more mile away we wouldnt have. I also know that anyone who doesn't believe in God, go through that and you will, we made it from on top the Smokey Mountains to central Tennessee with nothing to spare - nothing. Brings a wonderful symbol of Christmas to me.
