Okay I installed the new HD...finally.

I installed a fresh copy of XP SP2 on it and then threw my old HD in as its slave (both under primary IDE). Now my question is that my old HD shoudl have my old e-mails right? I can't seem to find them. blah. Everything appears to be functioning. I merely need to install my programs and I'm up and running.



I installed my PCI slot fan. Please see simple diagram below:

5. agp graphics card. installed upside down with fan facing floor of case, intake of air to cool unit. This is the only way it goes in case.

3. slot fan. Fan faces down to avoid counteracting graphics card fan. The slot fan is at the same height as my case fan which is at the front of the case, pulling air inward. The idea being that the exhaust fan capture the air coming and flushes it out the back.
2. SPDF thingy.. no idea what this is for. Dig camera?
1. Sound card.

the slot fan sucks air and blows it out the back. it would be more benficial, if you can, to put it above the agp card... heat rises and all... or, if it could be reversed with the opening of the fan towatds the graphics card, that would be o.k. to as it could evacuate warm air coming off the graphics card and surrounding area...

yes, your e-mails are there. look in this folder somehwere...

C:\Documents and Settings\<username you used on old install>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{5DE0F9CC-8503-4B37-9361-87F1FD987735}(this will be a different number)\Microsoft\Outlook Express

inside that you should have the files that represent your folders for outlook express... just set up outlook in your new install, then copy or move those files to the new install location (which is similar to the above).

You can never have to many fans in your computer grifter...if there is one thing that is a definate killer of systems is heat. I have two fans in mine and thinking about adding a PCI slot fan myself to push air off my Radeon Card. Currently my fan configuration is Main Fan at back of PC blowing air over my my CPU FAN/HEATSINK which in turn is being sucked out by the front case fan. I played some BF2(finally), shut down my system and opened my case and the Radeon card was hotter than a $2 hooker with a 50 cent sale going on (well not that hot but you get my idea), all she has is the heat sink on her so I'm thinking a PCI slot fan will help move that air towards the CPU which in turn will be carried away by the main system fan to the front panel fan.

Certainly the right fan can make a difference too. If you want any useful links, let me know, I have a ton of them. :lol: Have you ever considered water cooling? Just an idea. . . . . . .

Ok Kodiak thanks. Steel, I could place the EXHAUST slot fan above the agp graphics card BUT the fan touches the card and I'm afraid it may unduly damage it? Option 2: I could have the fan pointing toward the graphics card from below; however, that would mean that as the graphics card's fan sucks air in (graphics card loads in box upside down) the exhaust fan is sucking air off of it? Which do you think is best?

Oh, and when I said the right fan, I also meant to include the correct heatsink - there are plenty out there to choose from, which perform admirably in comparison to the standard heatsinks. probably for not much more than around $30 - 40.

I do have the proper heatsink, though I'm sure I could put a better one in. My concern is the placement of this fan. Steel, if you see my last post, and you have time, let me know what you think.

if you can face it toward the video card from below that is fine... it will not suck air from the video card fan. place it an extra slot away, not immediately below it.

the front fan blows INTO the case and the rear fan blows OUT of the case...

I know Steel but I have to do that setup. In my house, I have found that it minimizes the dust coming into my machine that way. I don't like that idea but I must conform to my house and not to my equipment in that situation

Steel, I found that I can indeed mount the fan ABOVE the graphics card afterall, leaving about a centimeter of space. The fan blades is facing the card; hopefuly, it will suck up hot air bleeding off the card and out the back of the pc. My problem is that the fan I bought is not that impressive. It had some rave personal user reviews and was cheap enough, but frankly I don't think it's kicking out a lot of air. If I continue to experience problems, any other suggestions for cooling? Please bear in mind that I'm a novice and I'm probably better served by keeping my hands out of the pc box...so simpler solutions are probably better.

I just placed my hand on the case and it's very warm...hot even. The heat monitor I have installed says that the cpu is running at 68C and the CHA (whatever this is, not sure) is 46 C. Any ideas?

EDIT/BUMP:
So far no computer freezing etc with the new slot fan in place. Still, my comp runs hot or at least seems so to me. I did place the slot fan nearly on top of the graph card, sucking hot air, I hope, off of it. Any other suggestions for cooling off this pc Steel? Raptor? Kodiak, how bout those links when you get a chance, I'd be interesting in taking a look.
