Help. Lost Internet Connection twice today

Just suddenly stopped working. I disconnected the cable modem from power and then plugged back in. Quickly resolved the issue for the most part, but no explaination as to why my connection cut off in the first place? As you know I've recently installed a new HD and new install of XP etc. I did'nt really do much to connect the Internet other than use the setup wizard to acknowledge that I was on a cable modem. Am I missing something? Any suggestions would be helpful

Windows XP firewall maybe? Have you tried closing that down? Are you running XP SP2?

your new install will have nothing to do with your cable modem dropping the connection, if indeed that is what the problem was. Now if you unplugged the network cable and it worked after plugging it back in, that is kinda odd and may indicate a network driver problem. otherwise i would be stumped. if you shut the cable modem off and turned it back on, it is probably a problem with your modem ot isp service and not related to your new install...

i wanted to tell you this anyway...make sure you have done all of your windows updates!

if you are not running a hardware firewall in combination with your cable modem, i do NOT suggest turning off your xp firewall... and if you are running a software firewall, i do suggest running the xp firewall...

Well my xp firewall was off actually when this happened. I'll turn it on now. No I did not unplug my network cable at any time. I simply disconnected the modem from the power source. It has not happened today. Also, I had made sure I got all the updates the day I did the fresh install; yes, I'm running SP2 up to date. Strangely, it happened both times while Karen was on her computer. We share a hub, could that be it?

uh, yes...maybe.

what does share a hub mean? you have the cable modem connected to the hub to which each computer is connected?

do you have two IP's in your deal with your ISP? or do you have a firewall/router/cable modem combination connected to the cable?

Modem connects to hub. hub connects to both computers, each have their own ip.

k - static ip's then? you set them as given to you by your isp?

if this worked before, then it should not be a problem - just make sure you are getting two different ip's. you can test by starting up both computers, open a comman prompt on each, type ipconfig then hit enter... that will give you the basic ip information of each computer - you need to ensure you are not both having the same ip address...

Oh I see. Well they're not then. However, my ip has been the same for about a year. Guess that's why I thought it was static. Ok I guess it's set by the isp then.

They are different. When she is on her computer, something happens that causes her to break connection with the modem and I lose connectivity as well. I have to disconnect the modem from power and reboot it to get us back online. What should I do?

who supplied your cable modem? you or your isp?

what brand and model is it?

did you try your isp tech support?

My parents had a similar problem. After much teeth gnashing, we discovered that it was their ISP's way of enforcing their policy of giving out only one IP address per account. They weren't enforcing it for a long time and connecting multiple pcs was working fine. Then, one day they started enforcing it and everytime the second pc connected, it booted all connections. Just a thought. Make sure your ISP supports or allows multiple connections through their modem ...

Simple solution is to use a router/home gateway ... that way, the router gets the IP address and the computers get private LAN IPs.

Just a thought.

Thank Gator. But I'm paying two IP's from comcast. No I have not called tech support yet. I may do so before this is over, but I thought it might be a simple fix that you guys would be able to solve easily....hmm.

Ok both comps have their on IP and are hooked up to a hub, which runs to the cable modem: Motorola SB 4220 Surfboard modem. Comcast supplied the modem, they are my isp. Any other suggestions before I call these morons? I am paying for two IP accounts. ten bucks extra a month for the second ip.

well Grif, you stumped me. Sounds like you have a legit beef with your ISP.

If you are paying for 2 IP addresses, you're definitely not getting what you payed for.

well, I am getting them...just Karen's is'nt staying stable. I would think that this has something to do with my HD install since this all started after I did that.

no way can your hd install affect another computer. the only way is if each computer is getting the same ip address.

try turning your pc off and see if you have the same problem with Karen's. i am actually betting it is something with the modem and having two ip's behind it...do you even remember setting something up or installing any software on your pc for having two computers on at the same time?

definitely give your isp a call...

good - but if you test just hers alone before you call them it will be a valuable data point.

sorry bro - without actually being there it is hard to determine what the problem is...
