John Carpenter Movies

Post by PanzerMeyer »

I've always loved his movies. It seems that he achieved the pefect balance between B-movie campiness and serious film-making. Which of the following would you say is your favorite Carpenter film (if any).

ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK

THE THING

THEY LIVE

HALLOWEEN

DARK STAR

THE FOG

I don't know if I would give him so much credit for Dark Star. That seemed to me to be far more an O'Bannon creation (wrote and starred in).

A million suns shine down
But I see only one
Tryin' to think I'm over you
I find I've just begun
The years go faster than the days
There's no warmth in the light
And how I miss those desert skies
Your cold touch in the night

CHORUS:
Benson, Arizona, the warm wind through your hair
My body flies the galaxies, my heart longs to be there
Benson, Arizona, the same stars in the sky
But they seemed so much kinder when we watched them, you and I

Now the years pull us apart
I'm young and now you're old
But you're still in my heart
And the memory won't grow cold
I dream of times and spaces
I left far behind
Where we spent our last few days
Benson's on my mind

(CHORUS)

8)

Actually, he should get just as much credit. Not only did Carpenter direct the film, he also co-wrote it with O'Bannon

Man, those are all classics! Because they ended up on TV, is why so many people actually rem them, strange how that works.

I actually prefer the 1951 version, The Thing From Another World, although Carpenter's update is in some respects closer to the story upon which both are based, that being "Who Goes There?" by John Campbell.

The original Thing was a classic horror film, all about the suspense and the unknown. The remake was a monster movie using the latest in special effects with the twist of it taking people over. They're really very different films.

The Thing

The Thing is an awesome movie. One of the best movies ever. The whole concept of such a creature is absolutely horifying.

And when the mother fuckers head comes off, his eyes come out on stalks, and it grows fucking spider legs, and Palmer is sitting there staring at it, and says "You gotta be fucking kidding. That's just classic right there.

The Thing ………. The Fog

I like Pirate movies and I also like Alien movies. So I’m torn between the two.

The Thing was awesome with the special effects back in the day. There was nothing like it back then. That’s what keep my attention.

But ! I knew Kurt Russell “ Being The Good Guy “ had to live to the end. Plus the whole ‘ Who Done It “ concept has been played out before in so many other movies way before this one. So I’d like to think we all had a good idea of who really done it back when this movie first showed.

With that being said , even tho I had a good idea of how the story would end , I much-admired the way the story was carried out and how well the actors played their roll. Good stuff. I like keen actors who can keep the tension going and leave you hanging in suspense.

Now the Fog was a total surprise package. You never knew what would happen next. Just what the hell were those men coming out of the Fog. Did they come back from beyond their water grave seeking revenge for what happened 100 years ago ? Or are they going to blow in with The Fog once a year.

I had a tingling sensation running down my spine when I saw this movie for the first time. It had a good opening with a spooky midnight tale in the beginning and then kept it interesting throughout the movie. Topped it off with upright style in the end and you have a quality movie that’s worthy to see because it’s different from the rest.

So I dunno , It’s a toss up.

But Yeah , I’ve seen a few other Carpenter movies on the tube latterly and I was thinking the same thing. Just how many good movies does he have ? Thanks , .. Now I know.

I have never seen The Fog, but it is on Sci-Fi now so I am watching with glee. Shoot I didn't even realize that They Live was a John Carpenter movie. That one is a classic as well. Rowdy Roddy Piper running around killing alien invaders, not to mention that this movie is thought to have been the birth place of the line, "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum."

Another one that has me saying. "What more can you ask for?"

There is something "odd" about THEY LIVE. In so many ways it's a campy B-movie but at the same time it's good! Rowdy Roddy Piper is not exactly Russel Crowe but he was perfect in that movie. Oh, and Keith David was good too.

Big Trouble in Little China

Post by Hudson »

On a completely unrelated note I was looking up Big Trouble in Little China, and noticed that this is also a John Carpenter movie. Has anyone seen this most excellent John Carpenter flick? Yet another classic. A few more movies like these, and I am just going to host a John Carpenter movie day at my place when I get back in the states
