Norton's Anti-Virus

I recently came up against a problem with NAV, it wouldn't run due to an internal error. I had to uninstall then re-install, which I did. Now the program won't run, no matter how many times I have re-installed it.
Anyone care to offer some advice? I'm at a total loss right now. One thing I did notice is that the program during re-install should request my code, but doesn't. :?

Ok, now this is for the Corp Ed of NAV, but it may work for you too. You may have to get a little nosy in your registry to find these if you don't find they have the exact same names as listed here:
1. Stop the Norton AntiVirus Client and Defwatch services if they are running.
2. Navigate to the following subkey:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
3. Delete the LDVPMenu entry.
4. Navigate to the following subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services
5. Delete the following entries:
Defwatch
NAVAP
NAVAPEL
NAVENG
NAVEX15
Norton AntiVirus Client
Norton AntiVirus Server (This entry is not normal for a client install, when found, be sure to delete.)
6. If no other Symantec products are installed, then also delete the SymEvent entry.
7. Navigate to the following subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventLog\Application
8. Delete the Norton AntiVirus entry.
9. Navigate to the following subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\INTEL\DLLUsage
10. Delete the VP6 entry
11. In the left pane, click My Computer, click Edit, and then click Find. Search for the following string, and delete any keys or values found:

VirusProtect6

Continue to search for this string until no further results appear.
12. In the left pane, click My Computer, click Edit, and then click Find. Search for the following string, and delete any keys or values found:

74BE21DBFDBD3D11EBAE000ACC725290

Continue to search for this string until no further results appear.
13. Navigate to the following subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\InstalledApps
14. Delete the following entries:
VP6TempID
VP6ClientInstalled
NAVCEClientNumber

15. If no other Symantec applications that use virus definitions are installed, navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec key. Otherwise, skip to step 17.
16. Delete the SharedDefs entry.
17. Delete the following subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{BD12EB47-DBDF-11D3-BEEA-00A0CC272509}
18. Navigate to the following subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
19. Delete the vptray entry.
20. Restart the computer.

Obviously, some of these reference NAVCE, which isn't your version. However, you should find something comparable in there like NAV2002 or something.

Well, having found a version of AVG, I have done exactly that. And we'll see how that runs for a while. But as you can understand, there is always more belief in a purchased product than anything free.

sounds like you got it taken care of.

just thought i would offer an experiance i had with NAV once long ago ( more then 3 years ago i think)

somehow i DLed a virus. and it actualy went threw and killed NAV and macafee AV ( that i got with a software bundle) im not exactly sure what it did, but none of my AVs would work at all. so i deleted them and reinstalled them, low and behold the pesky virus wouldnt let it install. it seemed it had soemthing in it to look for popular AV apps. so i DLed a free trial of doctor somthing or other and it found it and whiped it out.

just a side note though. believe it or not, all the years ive been online i rarely use AV or firewalls...

the worst thing ive gotten in that time is that damn about:blank spyware thing. i do check often now days for adaware and maybe once every 3 months with my AV software. the worst thing the AV finds is a trojan or something here and there. but usualy its linked to something the malware/addware DLed to my system. keep in mind, i NEVER do money transactions on my PC. this is pretty much a gameing system and for web browsing. i have nothing important on it.

ive been told this is foolish, but just running off my experiance alone, ive had more problems with protective software then the few bugs ive gotten without it.

Thanx B-H, all advice welcome. Duly noted by the way, sounds quite similar to what I have experienced here. But for now I am going to leave Norton's out of the picture, and do a more regular AV check than normal using AVG.
