Laptops and Water

If anyone was under the mistaken belief that $3,200 laptops and water mix, let me just clear up that myth right now. THEY DON'T

On the list of parts that will never work again, we have the motherboard, keyboard, touchpad, and 512MB of memory
Image

On the list of parts that just might pull through we have the DVD burner (can confirm that that is working in another system), the two 60GB disk drives, 512 MB of RAM, 256 MB PCI Express GeForce Go 6800., some-billion-in-1 card reader, 3.6GHz CPU, 1680x1050 LCD, most the other pieces in the sytem.

Fortunately it looks like I can fix it for under $700. That anticipates known bad parts, shipping, and other parts that may or may not be so hot.

:( :(

Could have been worse...

The PIII 700 MHz I have actually runs FB/AEP/PF fairly well, so I can still play while I'm waiting for parts, and remembering how to put all that shit back together. Unfreaking believable...

Shame! Were you plugged-in to the main supply at the time? In my experience, a lot of the time, that's what does it, not so much running off battery power. The small power consumptions associated with laptop type set-ups rarely cause major damage unless one of the internal circuits or peripherals is accessing/utilising a high current line at the precise moment you have your "spillage" - bit of a lottery really!
A more obvious example of what I am trying to say - drop your mobile phone down the toilet while it's switched off. Take it apart and leave it over/around the radiator for a day or two. It'll be fine 99% of the time. Now switch it on, and do the same thing. The current usage is so small the chance of damage to the circuits is very low indeed, however, still more likely to cause problems than if the phone was switched off.
If you now go to a laptop where the current levels are somewhat higher, you can appreciate the chance of permanent damage is greater. But not as great as they could be, if at that moment the CDROM/DVD was accessed for data from the disc in drive, or the hard drive. Other areas of greater risk are where the location of spillage is in the vicinity of higher current capable peripherals supply lines.

man hudson i feel for you :(

i hope the cost isnt too high to repair.

your story kind of reminds me of one of my Planetside buddies, he is a trucker and uses his laptop to play the game, usualy at flyingJ truck stops that have net access. to make a long story short. he got himself a puppy for keeping him company on long trips. low and behold that little 4 legged devil peed on his laptop not once .... but twice....

So, in other words, you've laid the remnants of your once beautiful laptop in front of your blatant shrine to your wife eh? Notice there is numerous pictures there of Bonnie....clearly a shrine to his wife. Hey Bonnie's cool don't get me wrong, but if you think she's going to snap her fingers and magically make your laptop whole again, you're sadly mistaken my friend. Well can't say I blame you. If I was a lonely, married Marine stuck on some godforesaken rock with the luxury of having a place to put photos of my wife, I would too. LOL

One of two shrines actually...

It's one of two shrines actually... One upon my desk, and one when you open up my secretary where upon you are greeted by a photo of my wife on the desktop of my computer and the doors on both sides covered from top to bottom, not one square inch free (you could see the beginnings of one door in the emails i sent after i was nearly fangoriously devoured) with pictures of her.

And yes, she did snap her fingers, and yes it is getting the laptop fixed. When I told her I wasn't going to waste the money getting it fixed she snapped her fingers, put down her foot, and said the magic incantation, "Either you send it to Alienware so they can fix it, or I'll buy you an even newer more expensive laptop!" And wham, it was of to FL to get fixed, cause no threat coming from the lips of my beautiful wife is an idle threat!

Does it qualify her as a Goddess worthy of worhsip?

Yes. Yes it does!

You have pictures inside your secretary? Did she let you put them in there? She didn't complain that it hurt? :?:

Perhaps because the word fangorisouly was invented by Strong Bad in his childrens book written in Episde 84
