These track day/events & hill-climb events are quite common over here - Nordschleife, Silverstone, Donnington, Castle Coombe, Spa Francorchamps, and so on all do these kind of events during the year.
Mind you, over here you dont particularly need to use tracks like that to enjoy driving, given the type of layout we have for roads in UK/Europe. Having said that, the limits are much greater and the safety factor is non-existent. Doesn't stop some of them mind you.

me and the lads i live with are planning a track day at silverstone at the end of this summer, as you have to be 21 to take part, and they're 20 until about august. Should be a blast....apparently it's ferrari's, tvr's and caterham's all round

I'm reading that article and I'm amazed at how Gran Turismo 4 copied that track (I am halfway thru a 200km race on The Nürburgring Nordschleife), and in this article I can almost picture each curve turn bump and catching air that he describes, like the infamous 270 degree turn with the concrete cinder blocks, there are two banked curves here and the second one boast a deep 90 degree turn from a fairly nice str8 away that can get you if you don't watch the road instead of your speed, but the first has a nice winding country road feel to it that can stand your hair on end even from the comforts of your couch.
One thing I have learned about the GT4 version of this track if your not careful and in a rear wheel drive car you can find yourself kissing security barriers because you tend to float when your going down hill (the course makes you think your sitting on easy street and can floor the pedal but once that gentle curve that needs proper braking technique for you to get thru comes up and you attempt to find your apex next thing you know you feel like your on a sheet of ice and your life flashes before your eyes).
This course from the games perspective is very competitive and challenging due to the countless uneven sections of the track that can cause your car to loose its center of gravity very very quickly and you will find yourself tail first into a barrier. I find that keeping the front torque heavy in rear wheel and vice versa in front wheel you will survive to see another race on that track, but keeping your car that way is a challenge in itself on top of the other problems you have to deal with. I find myself in the game trying to beat the course instead of the competition. Crossing the finish line is reward enough for me.
When I get home today I might get into my 775HP TOM's Z350 and see how much do I remember of that course. By the way if you get this game or already have it you will or already love the 24 hour LeMans course old and new, old preferably due to the 3 or 6 mile str8away that can put you at almost 250 mph if your car is tuned right. Hell the back end of this course boast 100 mph deep curves if you setup your apex early and correctly.
