You have to open the appropriate ports. What I do though is to DMZ host, which opens all ports and exposes one computer on your network to the internet so that you can both host as well as connect to another host. You have to go into your router's programming, it is usually an advanced topic and you have to know the LAN address of the computer that you want to designate as DMZ host - usually the one you are playing your games on.
On Falcon 4 you have to add an IP switch to the command line that launches your Falcon 4 game. You will put in the WAN address for your network.

Use the DMZ feature - it opens them all.
Unreal 2, C&C Generals

You shouldn't need to worry about ports with Unreal 2, it is SP only. If you put your computer on the DMZ, you will not have to open any ports. You just have to remember to take it off the DMZ when you are done playing.
I can't wait for C&C Generals to be released, supposed to be one of the best RTSs ever released, with great graphics to boot. The Nuke explosions alone is worth the cost of the game. They say that all 3 races (US, China, GLA) are very well balanced, and no one side has an advantage. That makes for some great strategies.
