I cant wait to start the commentary track for it. It includes the director of the film, director of aerial sequences and a military historian. Disc 2 has several featurettes which includes the making of the movie and recollections of an RAF squadron leader.

Most British actors of that era spent time within the armed forces during WW2. Although the movie was primarily a British movie anyway, I believe much of which was shot at Pinewood studios - the famous scene of the airborne spitfire/hurricane pilot which had someone walking across the backdrop sky still gets shown in the "It'll Be Alright On The Night" show to date! Not that you get to see it in the released movie, but it may be shown in the DVD Extras disc. Nemisis will surely recall which scene I am referring to . . . . .
Anyway, non-Brits wouldn't have appeared out of place in that movie. When you study the stats, you'll notice the large percentage of Americans, Canadians, Polish, etc who took part in the defence of the Isles during that phase of the campaign alone.
