In the book, soldiers are carrying M&Ms, apparently for when they are wounded. Is there any particular reason for this or is it simply a source of comfort? Why M&Ms?

Perhaps for the sugar? Since M&Ms are tough and don't melt easily, they're easily transported intact when out in the field. So if you get wounded, perhaps an intake of sugar helps you out?

Can't say I've heard of that, so probably just a comfort thing IMHO.

I wonder if the German Army in WWII carried Marzipan with them for the same reasons? LOL

I might have to get/read this book, sounds good. I now have a "mission" at lunch.
M&Ms? Hmmmm, maybe because they taste good and it diverts the soldiers attention of their injury? *shrug*

I always have a "mission" during my lunch hour. It involves watching movies or tv shows on my portable dvd player.

I've never read it either, sounds like a good summer read. It's more of a tear jerker than just a war book I think. The title tells it all, it's about the things that men carry into war and their significance.
