Well, this pushes me off the fence on getting BF2142. I will NOT be getting BF2142 because of this:

tbh this doesn't bother me too much. I don't do anything illegal on my PC, the porn i look at is all above board PDT_Armataz_01_11 , and at least they had the decency to tell us. How many companies put covert spyware in their products? At least this way, it's a conscious choice as to whether you think the game's worth it or not. I've installed it, and am really enjoying it.
What really gives me the shits about this situation is how EA are getting extra revenue from the game, in the form of advertising (one would assume), yet it has done nothing to bring down the RRP of the game.

another reason NOT to give them any revenue...

Yeah, you know people need to stop trying to put a god damned ad on or in everything that consumers are exposed to. I should be able to play my games without being harrassed by the proverbial telemarketer.

i know many of you have made up your minds not to buy BF2142, but for those undecided amongst you, i've dug up the official line from DICE re: the in game advertising, which can be read here

well and good...but still the point of even additional income on in game adverts. no one knew this ahead of time??? i do not think they published this info - but i did see a reference somewhere, but it was vague. now that folks have raised the issue they come public with it? despicable behavour.

from a technology point of view i think it is pretty cool...but they definitely handled it wrong.

i will prefer to wait for quake wars. hopefully they don't jack it up...

In all honesty, you can't go aneware without seeing a ad. Every web page has them, ever street, the coke can on your desk is a ad, every logo da da da.

they are not searching your pc for info, just grabbing the ip address and figuring out where you are, and placing adds in there. I have seen a lot worse then this and no one tells you about it. Hell most Tv shows are showing ads of sorts, take Singfield, not my favorate show, but do you think that row of cerial in his kitchen was put there for free.

By now most of you shoud have gotten to the point that adds just don't even bother you of realy affect you much. I rearly rearly and I do mean rearly buy anything because I saw a ad. I do research, I look at facts and such. Hell buying paper towel, I well figure out hat roll gets me more in the end lol. so Big deal, ads, just ignore them, I sure as hell do. And hey they could just not tell you, as there are other games with adds in game actualy (names escape me at the moment). the only diff her eis that they are putting adds geared towards your area by ip address, eh just means the adds might me more entertaining

the problem i have is that most things that use ads for revenue are FREE to the end-user.

Well ys and no, a bus costs me cash, tho the add's suplement my fair so its not higher. I am paying cable bills so I can see signfield, well realy looking for a good show but goes with last post. The can of coke I am drinking on my desk cost me 50cents and is advertisment. But some advertisments such as say billbords, and internet sights don't cost you a cent. so it dose depend on the situation. I don't like ads, beleave me, but again, I don't think I am going to let ads get in the way of me playing a fun game. Imagion if Mechwarroir 4 mercs had ads, um would we all have just not played it, doughtful. And since Microsoft made the game, it would not have suprised me to have adds in it either. but I still would have played becuase I likes the game type.

also I would liek to point out that I well bet you dollers to donuts (and I mean those good canadian donuts to) that ther ewill be a modd out soon enough to block the ads aneway. I am actulay not a huge fan of EA games aneway, they treate there game developers like crap and burn them out real fast, have released a large amount of sub par games and da da da. but its like Microsoft, I am not a big fan either, but they have software i want/need to use. So I use it, and enjoy. I think a lot of this not getting the game stems from people not relay sure they where getitng it in the first place or not, this jsut tiped them over the fence to the not side. I have heard this game is basiclay Battilfield 2, but with more futuristic look to it. If you liked battlefield 2, then you wel probaly like this. I well probaly get it so I ust have a first person shooter I can jump into and just kill things, no stragity.

I'm going to guess that this "addition" will give BF2142 less overall sales thatn BF2. I know of at least (2) less sales it will have. Lol.

I don't mind ads in certain games I would expect ads (Sports games, billboards in cities, etc..), but when you have no choice to whether the ad software is installed or not, that's what I do not agree with. I find it a bit intrusive, and not being able to install and play BF2142 without it is unacceptable IMO.

I am hoping Enemy Territory: Quake Wars does not go down this path.

EDIT: I found this link that shows some SS of the billboards for the ads.

suggested scenario that I would find acceptable:

BF2142 Standard Edition (Ad supported) - $44.99
BF2141 Premium Edition (Ad-free) - $49.99

Give me a benifit for tolerating the ads or allow me to buy my way out of seeing them.

"Every web page has them"

bite your tongue!!! i have never displayed adds on this site or forums!

(you might argue that the phpbb plus banner up top is an add - but it is for a free software that you are looking at right now).

i might put up adds (banners/links) of other free gaming sites, or maybe someone/some entity that supports this site - but that would be about it. never for income.

True enough steel, but hey you know what I mean. Majority would be a beeter word then. So Majority of sites have ads.

and I like your idea of pay a little more t get out of adds. Some web sites as well as programs do exactaly that. I am betting they could even do 50$ reg and 60$ ad free version and still get away with it easy enough. to be hoenst I am still waiting for my unreal turtoment 2007 to hit in 2 months PDT_Armataz_01_20
