RvS: Auto Downloading Maps from HOST in RvS

Post by Softball »

Just in case someone doesn't have a map installed that the Host/server is running, here is a tip I found to allow you to DL the map(s) when you join a server.

But what does that do to a game in progress or trying to progress??? I was this article too, did not have time to read. I am concerned about what it does to precious bandwidth and the effect it has on an already potentially laggy game.

Downloading missions

After reading the article, there is apparently a 2.5K/s max bandwidth limit when uploading from the Host to the Client thru the game. That would take WAY too long to wait for a map to DL.

There is a workaround where you can put the maps on a seperate server somewhere, and the map will DL from the seperate server and not the Host. The Host just has to have the URL for the map files setup in the RvS.INI file. If you read the link to the post, it will explain it. I have not tried doing this yet, so I can't comment on whether it works or not. I wonder how big the maps (files and everything) are anyway?

The maps along with their supporting files can be pretty big ... on the order of 20MB or so ... definitely not something to be done at 2.5K/s ...

Format

Post by Softball »

Not really sure what format. From what I can tell you just put all the files into their respective folders unzipped and the game will grab them as is. I will look into this more if this is something we want to do. I think it's easier to just DL the map first, install it, and you are ready to roll. I did find a way to figure out what maps are Adversarial, Terrorist Hunt, and Hsotage Rescue. On the MAIN MENU, click CUSTOM GAME. On the left you will see the types of maps, click the type you want and the maps that support it are labled in WHITE on the map list. Some of the maps we ran thru did NOT work in Terrorist Hunt or Hostage Rescue like it says it does.

So far, the one's that did NOT work are:

PC GAMER maps (FREEZES HOST)
VICE BAR (NO TANGOS)
CLOSE QUARTERS (CTD)
WESTCOTT RESIDENCE (COULD NOT START GAME)
TEQUILA (NO TANGOS?)

interesting - did anyone try Close Quarters in adversarial mode? when we first tried it, it ctd'ed as well but we though it may have been because it was in the rotation and Kodiak joined but did not have it yet...
