Ravenshield 1.3

Boy, this patch reminds me of some of the early OFP patches - a step backwards. I had a couple of glitches in SP before (on some of the last missions of the SP campaign, it would CTD on loading the preplanned team!). But now i have screen freezes as well.

Add this to the MP problems we have been having lately (either no improvement for most of us or more connection problems and drops) and this sim is really starting to piss me off.

Yep

I feel the same way. And with RW either acting up either on its own or in conjunction with RavenShield its just losing appeal. RW drops out every 5 minutes. Lag you can do nothing about, and random crashes (in Ravenshield that is). To top it off still no stand alone server. The server, even without graphic,s crashes every x number of hours so its impossible to leave a server up unless you babysit it and there is no way for anyone to effectively manage it unless you give everyone involved access to the system desktop; not exactly the best way to go about things....

all this from a game that is built upon an engine that from what I understand has good network code and a web interface for managing dedicated servers..... hmmmmmmmmm

But when it works it is a damn fun game and almost seems to be worth all the hassle

Sounds like Falcon - and we're still flying that dinosaur 5 years later...

Hudson, I don't mean to be too critical here, but i don't see the connection between RW and RvS that you see. I do not see any significant difference in RW no matter what sim I am running. Maybe the higher demands that RvS seems to place on an individual's computer may increase the likelihood of problems. I think you said that your computer is 700 MHz? I think that may be part of your problem. What kind of sound card and video card are you using? Drivers updated? DirectX version? What version of RW? I know when i tried to update RW last week, the newest version did not run anywhere near as smooth as my older version. So I went back to the older version. It is still available on Steel's RLGaming site.

Steel? Raptor? Others? Is the above accurate? Why do only some have significant RW issues? Griffy just upgraded - and he still seems to have more RW issues than others. Or am I just lucky that I don't?

Just trying to help. :)

Madrus:I thought it was Hicks, not Hudson, but I am not sure.

I've had some wierd hiccups with RS, but not RW. My RS problems have only been when the game was being hosted by Madrus and the problems did include horrendus lag (10 second freezes) and wierd blackouts. I haven't played enough since the patch to know if that helps or hinders.

I would say it's not really any different than any other buggy game we pay for.

I agree with Madrus. Whenever there's problems, we should always check the subsystems (Direct X, RW version, etc ...) to make sure we can't limit the opportunities for bugginess.

RW and connection problems

I have no problems with RW at all since I have switched to WinXP Pro and a new Netgear NIC card. The only real problem I had with my new system was a Video driver issue, where I would lose total internet connectivity with ALL applications(RW, ICQ, IE, etc..). It turned out that the video drivers shared some of the same memory addresses as the TCP/IP stack, thus interrupting the connection.

It has been my experience (personally and known) that most RW and/or game connection issues boil down to one thing(but not in all cases), Firewalls. If someone is trying to host a game and have an incorrect or bad firewall configuration, or a bad firewall program(ZoneAlarm, NPF) or hardware(router), then they may have some lag issues or a connection problem. It could be a number of things, including net traffic in your neighborhood.

If the firewall is not the case(not using a firewall), then it could be other things: connection quality(ISP), computer TCP/IP settings, bad network hardware(Ethernet card, modem, cable modem, cable, etc...).

Pinpointing the problem could be tough, but not if you have the resources to troubleshoot. (other computer, spare parts, friends, knowledge, etc...)
