Gator, Jedi and I have been playing this lately and it's been a blast. Would anyone else here be interested in playing this game?

Have to say, it doesn't really appeal to me, but I'll have a look in the shops, and if it's going cheap enough just maybe I'll pick it up. Ther won't be much time for shopping this weekend though - we are off to Cardiff, Wales for the lil' guy's latest hockey tourney. Hope they have a good one.

The fact that the game lets you play coop is a major boon. There are two ways of doing it--bots emulating human players in the various game modes like DM, TDM, CTF, and the 2 great modes of Assault (objective-based team v team) and Onslaught (Sort of like BF42-style checkpoint system with some great vehicles).
The other way is Invasion, which is human players vs waves of monsters and bugs. You set it for X number of waves per map (which uses any DM maps available) and try and stay alive while wiping them out---only one life per person, so if everyone is killed before the buggers are killed, you lose. If just one person lives, everyone else respawns at the start of the next wave. The game defaults to SIXTEEN waves, but Gator, PM, and I have found 5 to be a better number. You actually have a chance of beating the map about 50% of the time.

any 'realism' mods to get rid of power-ups, multiple weapons, etc?

by Jedi Master
That would be Red Orchestra 2.1 right now--WWII Eastern Front class-based objective-type gameplay. German vs Russian snipers, MGs, engineers, commanders, and soldiers. About 500MB DL and the bots aren't quite as intelligent in it as they are in the standard game, but far more realistic than BF42/BFV. They don't have vehicles working in it yet, so it's just inf vs inf, but you can easily get a kill with one shot from a rifle vs the large number of hits in the standard game.
You can carry a primary weapon (some classes get a choice of 2, others get only 1) a secondary (a pistol for some, although some classes carry none) and grenades, with the engineer carrying some more--not certain as I've not played as engineer yet.
There are literally dozens of other mods in the works, including one that sounded like R6 or GR, just not certain if its more indoors/CQB or outdoors yet.

Panzer and I will be doing stuff tonight, but we'll be done by 11 eastern, which is 8 for you... I have to get up at 3:30 your time, you know!
There's a chance I may not be working Friday (depends on whether contracting decides this declared holiday for Reagan applies to us), so I'd be on later Thursday night. I'll let you know.

no, no... I don;t necessarilly mean a realistic mod. RO is still not really ready yet, but looks pretty promising. Plus it is still for UT2K3 as far as I know?
I mean just something simple to get rid of the crap I really hate - powerups, multiple weapons (like 12 at a time), etc. I can deal with sci-fi stuff - love it actually. So?
Red Orchestra

Gator, Jedi and I played some Red Orchestra last night and it was fun. Like Jedi said, the bots are not the smartest but it's still fun checking out the really well-made maps and the excellent weapons.

Not that I know of, Steel. Of course, there are somewhere around 6.24 x 10^29 different mods out there.

So is RO out for UT2K4, or were you plying UT2K3? Or is UT2K4 backwards compatible?

I believe it is, as I read somewhere if you don't like features, models etc. in the UT2K4, you can use the stuff from UT2K3

Actually, there's a 2k4 version of RO.

yep - found it and downloaded it last night. now i just need a copy of ut2k4. any reason to keep ut2k3, or can i trade it in?

The only reason to keep UT2k3 would be for mods that haven't been ported yet. The base UT2k4 install includes all maps and game modes from 2k3---kinda like Il-2:FB had everything Il-2 had.
UT2k4 Mods: Frag Ops

by Jedi Master
Well, I've tried the Frag Ops mod for UT2k4.
Think a better looking RvS with low jumping (it's not like the stock game's jumping, but you CAN jump) with objectives, team vs team.
You buy guns at the start of the round with cash you earn from playing. Guns like the P90, AK94, M16, Desert Eagle, etc. At first glance it seems fun, but whether it lasts or not...well, how much can you tell from one session?
Anyway, on to try Jungle Warfare now.
Oh, with these 2 mods, Red Orchestra, and Troopers, my UT directory is 10GB!!!!!

Ok, I just tried Jungle Warfare.
The atmosphere is like GR or Vietcong. You play Marines or Guerillas, you have 6 classes. The only objective is killing the other team, though, so classes are not as important in some respects. The production values on these 2 mods is phenominal, though, like Red Orchestra. Literally game-within-a-game here.

Frag OPs has been around for a while... The better you do in a round, the more money you have to spend at the beginning of the next round - kinda odd, but it works. if you have unbalanced teams it sucks though... it would probably work for us with adverserial mode...
does Jungle Warfare have bots? can we do 'terrorist hunt' type games?
