Hey Badnews,
I just installed the expansion today and updated everything to the latest versions. I played around with a few of the new missions, and WOW! I can run 1024x768, 2xFSAA, and no slow downs, even when looking through the scopes. I like the way they do the Sniper scopes now, using elevation settings. You have to use your binos and get a range and then set the scope for that range, very cool.
I look forward to joining you guys for some JO:E fun.

Panzer and I played one coop mission last night...took us 90 mins!!
I love the bikes. I'll alter my earlier statement and say they're 10x better than the ones in OFP. I can't wait for someone to make a bike race map. ;)
Also, tanks blow up quite nicely. The best, however, are airplanes on the ground. The mission had you blowing up C-27s and C-130s at an airport. There was a tank sitting next to a C-27 and fuel truck--2 AT4s into that fuel truck and it looked like Vesuvius erupted! BOOM! Tank dead, plane gone.
I can't wait to try these online with more ppl.

SoftBall, isn't that how the sniper scopes have always worked in JO??
That is how i have always used them so far without the expansin pack, use binoculars set range on scope and shoot head off

I read how to do it once, forgot, then also forgot where I'd read it - so I don't even bother taking the time to do it. I simply aim & take the shot, if I miss a target and I can attribute the miss to possible range problems, I simply aim a little higher. Saves time, and I ain't hung-up on "shots per kill" so it doesn't bother me.
Think about this; if you aim at the head and it's a longer than standard shot, it will probably hit the abdomen or legs, so you'll likely get a wounding hit anyway, using a 7.62mm round will help make the kill more probable. So aiming higher will get you that head shot - this is just a game at the end of the day.
In real life there are many other factors to consider - make-up of the round such as type FMJ or HP, calibre (level of wound) & charge (supersonic or subsonic round velocity), rifling - which provides round stability (high stability or "tumble" round), atmospheric conditions between shooter and target, ability of the shooter, movement of the target. And there's more, as they say!

All of you hurry up and buy the expansion so we can play it soon!

Another thing the addon introduces is 3 types of ammo--FMJ, AP, and SP. Body armor means what kills one guy easy may not the next.

Actually, when JO first came out, you would zoom in and out with the scopes and the range meter (inside the scope screen) would change automatically. Now the scope does not zoom and and out, but the range meter changes (Holding down the CTRL key and scrolling the mouse wheel).
I still am amazed how beautiful JO is at 1024x768 at 2xFSAA. Only if OFP were that nice looking....*sigh*

The scroll button on the mouse, eh? Well, I'll have to give that a try - I haven't altered the default keymap so it should work. And of course you still have to obtain your target range using the laser binos right?

Softball sorry to disagree with you bud, but that is exactly how The scope worked originally and still does in my non expansion packed version, it's even in the Sniper tutorial, it teaches you both (middle mouse scroll) Zoom and (Ctrl middle mouse scroll) Range elevation in the wording at the beggining of the tutorial.
The Correct usage was to adjust your Zoom to the magnification that suited you, pick your target, get the range with use of the binoculars, then set the range elevation with the Ctrl and middle mouse button, then shoot.
After the 1.4.17 patch (not the expansion pack) the Zoom function was broken but the Range elevation still worked, the zoom is still supposed to work but they buggered it up in the patch somehow and it is supposed to get fixed in the next one. It was the single most moaned about screw up by J,OP's players when the 1.4.17 patch was released.
I will be getting the expansion pack but not just now, it will have to be a christmas pressie.

I do recall setting ranges on the scope previously. It has been a while since I did the sniper training mission, so forget...
also guys, the tick marks in the scope help you to determine range, you know...as well as elevate the rifle to the proper height instead of using a range knob. do some research. i bet Kodiak knows a bit about them and how they work as well.
i am not sure i will be getting this any time soon. i have a few finiancial obligations to retire first, and then i would probably rather play falcon 4, pacific fighters, hd2:ss, and freespace 2. we shall see...
i did ask in the other thread and got no reply - can you play mixed versions online? i.e. jo:tr and jo:e connected to the same server? or is it like the il2 franchise and you are unable to mix?

Huh? I know both I and BN-BOD replied to that question of yours...I don't remember where, though.
It's exactly like Raven Shield and Athena Sword. You get two icons, and people without the addon can play with people who do as long as the server is started by someone using the original icon NOT the addon's.

Yep! BN-BOD hit the nail on the head there, I simply apply the basic ranging technique that all personnel who use weapon sights should be taught, whether it be an assault weapon, sniper rifle, machine-gun post, armoured vehicle mounted sight unit or integrated system complete with laser ranging - they all have these reticule markers for manual ranging in the event of ranging system failure. There will be a height/width box for a standard target size, if you assume a standard sized target you then fit the target to the box or between the vertical and/or horizontal ranging lines which will then provide you the estimated distance to target, whereupon you then raise the weapon until the relevant sight marker intersects the target at your intended point of impact. If the target is moving of course you need to lead the target, distance from target and speed of target obviously affecting your lead, in practice lead is an experience thing - but to give you an initial idea of how much lead to pull, it's a case of how long will it take your round to reach the target. How fast the target moves should play no part, as you should be continually leading the target - all the way through the shot, until the trigger has been squeezed and held to the rear for a second - this is commonly referred to as follow-through. The finite time required for the chambered round to reach the end of the barrel as it is fired at the target is sufficient to cause a miss if you stop leading the target at the split second you squeeze the trigger, with an assault rifle. So consider the extra length of a sniper rifle, and then also the likely extra range to target - that's a considerable miss. But not sufficient for the intended target NOT to experience the "crack-thump" effect which will alert them to your presence, if not your position. And they can then seek shelter or make an attempt at returning fire (which might well be considerable) followed maybe by assault on your last known position or an arty barrage. Hence the reason why as a sniper you don't hang around in a position after taking your primary target shot, eh?!

K - i think you might have lost most of them there...
Anyone follow? Or do we need to set up a scope training session, and cover both NATO standard and Russian sighting systems (you'll notice the scope for the SVD is significantly different).

until the trigger has been squeezed and held to the rear for a second - this is commonly referred to as follow-through.
Well, that has certainly paid off, especially in the real world!
I'm shooting at Bisley again this weekend, I think...

That's a shame cos I was gonna say, tell your coach to bring along an extra rifle. And I would grab some ammo from here, and have a pop myself - used to enjoy the old Anshuetz (damn, can't rem if the 'e' should be b4 or after the 'u' when substituting for the umlaut! LOL! And I shoulda put one in there too!) Haven't done ANY shooting for a while now.
Well never mind mate there's always next time, eh?!
Yes, Steel, I probably did. You know what it's like you start trying to say something simple and . . . . . you end up in autopilot, LOL!

yes - and in this case a picture paints a thousand words. it is much easier to explain it with pics or looking through an actual scope.
i have not been shooting in forever either...
the good thing is i have Nidia hooked on it!

Yeah, I understand the enthusiasm - firstly for the shooting, and secondly that your other half actually has a depth of interest in that. Mine just isn't into anything I do, except Half Life 2, and maybe 10Pin bowling. And at that, it's not something I do myself, the only commonality is the computer.
I've tried everything - shooting, microlighting, golf, hockey (well I almost won there, and she does watch the lil' guy play!), jogging + gym work, metal detecting, photography, and a few other things but nothing seems to impress her. What to do, eh? Minds you she enjoys it when I go out and get drunk - leaving her alone, can't think why!
