I just wanted to put this out here for anyone who is interested. I picked up my copy of Star Wars: Empire at War today. This is a new Star Wars RTS game based in the Star Wars universe. I am 99% sure Panzer and Jedi are getting this, and I was just wondering if this interests anyone else here at WOF. I would like to get a MP coop game going whenever possible, I'm sure the game will also include a Skirmish MP mode as well.

If you haven't heard of Star Wars: Empire at War, come out from under your rock and look here:

tried the demo - it does not impress me that much. more of the same as far as rts goes. when they start to incorporate the ability to conduct true tactical combat, then i will be interested in these games. i like RTT, if you will... ;)

if you want to know what i am getting at, something like:

Austerlitz: Napoleon's Greatest Victory
Waterloo: Napoleon's Last Battle
Sid meier's Gettysburg
Sid meier's Antietam
Close Combat Series (except First to Fight)
Total War Series (getting bit much towards RTS though)
Fighting Steel
Ground Control & Ground Control II

There was also a fantasy game similar - I don't remember the name. The difference is these games concentrate mostly on tactics true to the period and managing an army in battle - not heavily abstracting combat like rts games.

I picked mine up last night. Haven't tried it yet, but I'll be reading the manual today to learn the stuff the demo didn't cover.

Isn't it erroneous to expect the same kind of tactical combat modelling in a Star Wars game that you would find in historically based games like the ones you mentioned in your list? They may all be RTS's but on the one hand you have historically-based authentic weapon systems and on the other hand you have totally fictional sci/fi weaponry. It's comparing apples to oranges.

no, it is not - but actually i never said i expected it. i just am not that enamored with these games because they do not have what i am looking for... you are not getting the idea, maybe i am not communcating well. i don't care about the time period... i care about modeling tactical combat to as much detail as possible - not abstracting the combat to a much higher level as the rts games do.

note ground control is futuristic sci-fi... note fighting steel is ww2 naval surface combat... both very different era's, but similar in that they are real time (i hate turn based) and model tactical combat with a pretty high degree of fidelity.

you might say i am looking for an RTT game, but these games are typically lumped into the RTS category as most folks can not grasp the difference...
